why do my girls keep pooping in the nesting box's

i tried putting a golf ball in each box for about a week, didnt help. i will close off some boxes so they cant get in them all. it sounds like i have to many. my boxes are not open at the top, they enter from the front.

thanks for all the help and i'l let you know how it goes.

Fred's Hens :

First, if your nesting boxes are up high, it leads me to suspect that they are sleeping in them, thus the poop. I'd rather not have my nesting boxes up too high, just for this reason. Second, don't have open nesting boxes available to yet-to-lay pullets. They'll just play and especially sleep in them. Could be a hard habit to break, once formed.

The roosts must be higher than the nesting boxes. This works best in conjunction with the chicken's instinct of sleeping "up high" for self protection.

We are in the process of finishing our coop & just attached the boxes today. Thanks for the reminder of blocking off the nest boxes. Our chickens are 5 weeks old today & will be going into the coop hopefully this weekend. I don't want them sleeping & playing in the boxes, & I'm sure that is EXACTLY what they would do.

I'm a very new chicken owner and have a LOT to learn and really enjoy this site. I have a Golden Comet laying one egg a day since i brought her home this past saturday. I went to look for my egg this morning and found a days worth of poop in her nest. It almost looked neatly stacked. I think my feeling were hurt! I thought, Are you mad at me "Miss Molly"? Did I do something wrong? I tell her all the time how pretty she is and all I keep thinking is what is she trying to tell me? The cedar shavings were just added fresh yesterday? Any thoughts or suggestions? I've considered the placement of the nesting box and im pretty sure that's where she sleeps too. But to poop where you sleep doesnt sound normal to me for any animal.

Guess, my chickens didn't read the rule book. I have 10 hens in this coop & they use all t

Nice chickens and nests, but a word of advice, take it for what you will, I had boxes somewhat similar to yours and recently tore them out and started over. Reason being when you have those wall section like that with an open top it invited them to roost on the walls and crap all over the nests, it was a mess. If this becomes an issue I recommend cutting the wall top at a steep angle back to front so they won't want to sit in top the walls, even better angle cut it then put a angled roof on it so they can't get up there and crap all over.
