Anyone HATCHING?!?!? Newbie's and addicts WELCOME!!!! Hatch Calendar page 1!!!! - Page 277

Okay tonight is lockdown for my silkies and lavender orps!! I think only 2 out of 18 LOs are going into lockdown.... That is unless those quit too.... That box was terribly mishandled by the post office 4 broke and I think only 5 or 6 started growing. 2 blood Rings and one 10ish day quitter.... sad.png

Here is my question.... I am using a hovobator genesis 1588 with turner.... My last hatch I took them out of the turner and put them on the wire lined with foamy shelf liner.... I have read that people use egg cartons to try and keep the eggs at the same height they were incubated for consistent temp .... As my bator is forced air shouldn't the temp be the same throughout? I have read varying opinions on using egg cartons to hatch... Anybody here have experience with this?

Hopefully I'll have a few silkies in a few days YEAH!!! big_smile.png

When I use to use my LG for lockdown I used the egg carton idea I found on here and had about the same turn out I did without them. I think it's really a personal preference, the one thing I didn't like about using the egg cartons was that it made it harder to look for pips on the eggs, what I did like about it was when the first chick hatched it kept it from kicking the other eggs all over the bator. Good luck with which ever way you decide to go with.

I have tried my first incubation, and it's a disaster.  I purchased an automatic egg turner rather than doing it myself, since this was my first I made the mistake of assuming the turner would work. I noticed I couldn't tell if it was turning but since the instructions said not to worry about it because it moved so slowly, I didn't. But on day 18 when I went to remove the turner, I noticed that the motor wasn't connected to the bar that turns the trays.  I'm sure I will have no hatchers, but I went ahead and put it in lock down mode. I am very discouraged but I will try again.

K guys, BIG question on chicks. I have 17 4wk old chicks strait run, various breeds. Someone has a pecking disorder and I don't know who it is. I'm pretty upset! I've put neosporin on their sores and separated the one out that are hurt from the 4 that aren't. What do I do??
