Sounds a lot like my silver leghorns. They're a lot like my Hamburgs and sort of hang out with them, too.

Icelandics. The ability to range was an important trait, in a country with long winters and little available homestead grain to feed a flock. The breed was isolated from the 9th Century to the past one. Ranging ability is strong in them as is flying ability, they normally seek the highest place in a barn or coop to roost. I dont know of another breed that flys as well or ranges as well. Check the thread here for accounts on this.
thanks guys
i think i have my list together.
i am ordering a box of free-range chicks next spring to include-so far:
ancona
egyptian fayoumi
campines
brown legherns
hamburgs
lakenvelders
i am going to get 5 of each and see who does the best.
i have a feeling opening this box of chicks will be like opening a box of crickets.
Hey dinahmoe, did you get everything on your first list? I'm curious as to how you settled on the Egyptians? Why did you eliminate each of the others?hello all,
i ended up getting Egyptian Fayoumi
i would put up some pics but they won't stand still.they are good little birds and are doing well free ranging.they are not laying yet but should be in a month although i will probably never find the nest.lol
thanks for all the suggestions on breeds.
