Egg bound chicken? Please help! *Video Link and Pictures*

Hi. This is my girl "Tuffs". She's about 4-5 years old now and stopped laying within the last year. Shes a mutt EE. She had problems with lice/mites in the warmer weather, but I dusted her and bathed her, so they're gone now. She also had flystrike, but I caught it in time and got rid of all the maggots.

Now, she has another issue. She has trouble walking, and especially running. She kinda of hobbles along, and tries to stay in one place. Her tail is to the ground, and not erect like usual.

She is eating and drinking. I have her inside now in a nice quiet area/pen. There is Nutri-Drench in her water now.

I'm not sure whats wrong, but maybe someone can help. Thanks.

Video. You can see she isn't as peppy as the others. (She usually is)

Chickens are like potato chips, you can't have just one!

Hens: 1 Buff Orpington & 1 Leghorn.         Pullets: 1 New Hampshire Red, 1 Light Brahma, 1 Speckled Sussex, & 1 Partridge Rock.

Have you checked her for a broken egg or one she can't lay.  ?  I put on rubber glove put ky lubricant on my finger and put it up their rectum gently to feel for egg they cannot lay or broken egg in their.  If there is on I remove it by using finger in hook motion to bring it on out.  I then give them some antibiotics.  But the only way I know to check is to feel and see.

What can I do besides the "lubrication method"? Is she defiantly egg bound? She won't sit either, it seems.

She looks eggs bound to me. Feel on the outside of the vent and abdomen for an egg. If it feels gritty the egg is either broke in side of her or the egg is soft shelled. If you can feel  the egg and its not broken her chances are better for living. The lubricating mathod is the best even though its nasty. Give her some yogurt, and warm sugar water. Keep her warm. You can use BYC's search engine ,for more ideas. Hope this helps and she gets better.  Keep us posted with updates. big_smile

I had her in a warm tub for awhile. Shes pooping and it looks normal so thats good. It does not feel gritty, just kind of soft and swollen. She'll get more baths tomorrow.

Thanks for replying.

Any other thoughts anyone?

When you put your finger inside you will fill above your finer swollen area that is where the egg is.  You have to find the exit hole at end and gently press your finger through it and then you wil feel egg.  Broken eggs remove fine as long as you give her antibiotics.  Works very well.  Sounds like she will be fine once you remove the egg
