3rd Annual New Year's Day Hatch!!

Wow! Those are big! They look like they are enjoying their greens too.

Curious, do they recognize and respond to you? I assume they would but I've never had much to do with turtles other than admiring them at the zoo or rescuing our wild ones off the road.

I've lost count of the number I've rescued on the way into or out of town, there are a lot of irrigation channels and dams around here and they often go wandering over the road and through the paddocks. These are the ones I usually find Eastern Snake-Necked Turtle

I've picked up a few rarer ones too, I figure if I don't help them no one else will so I move them off the road to the nearest water source. Usually they cross pretty close to one of the irrigation channels so I just help them get to the other side faster and safer.

They know their names and will come when called

They will weigh close to 200 pounds when fully grown. They are the third largest species of Tortoise on our beautiful earth. They will hopefully live to be 150 years old or even more. They are from the hottest region of Africa called the Sahel Desert. They eat hay and grass and green leafy treats

I have had them since they were three days old and they both fit in the palm of my hand together

Most of my tortoises will come when called. I have some Marbled Cherry Head Redfoots - Ceria, Silvio and Sparkle who I lovingly refer to as Curly, Mo and Larry because they will fall all over them selves to be the center of attention

Cool! Amazing to think they started soooo small and will grow soooo big.

I had no idea they'd come come when called, that's great!

Finally had time to candle. 14 developing, 6 I can't see into, and 4 MIAs. That's right, I lost eggs. The broodies were changing boxes. We marked all the eggs before we gave them to the broodies. None of the marked eggs came in the house. We moved a total of 20 eggs into the bator and we have no idea on the whereabouts of the other 4 marked eggs

Ya know, I hope you find those eggs soon because if they've hidden them in the litter you don't want to find them the hard way in a few months...

Been there, done that, don't recommend it.

Actually, that may work to your benefit! Here is one article on the subject. There are others, but I am too lazy to look them up....

http://www.pasreform.com/academy/fr...atching-eggs/16-storage-of-hatching-eggs.html
Store eggs small end up, starting on the first day of storage, if hatchery planning dictates that eggs must be stored more than 10 days. Alternatively, if eggs are stored on setter trays (blunt ends up), turn them 90° once daily.

Thank you, Kathy, I had no idea. I'm going to let the eggs settle tonight and put them in an incubator tomorrow, along with some of my own eggs. You are very right, I don't have anything to lose at this point. Might as well give it a try, hope for the best.

Thanks again,

Julie

Well, if we're sharing pictures of turtles... I hatched a couple dozen painted and snapping turtle eggs that were collected from raided nests and road casualties. The hatchlings were returned to the place of collection once ready.
