Thank you, I'm so happy with them. I have four from the NYD hatch and I've got another 12 from the Valentine's Day hatch. Considering I started out with a 2.3 group, I've really bumped up my numbers. I plan to do a few more hatches of them. Hopefully I'll end up with some more young show birds as good or better than my breeders (which were a show string I bought from an APA/ABA judge).

Anyone else's birds start laying yet? Got my first duck egg today and my speckled sussex are starting to grow combs and wattles.

The duck egg must have been wrapped in concrete... breaking into that sucker for breakfast was interesting.

Mine started laying about a week ago. They were small eggs at first, but they are getting larger.
I also hatched another set on April 3rd. It was a 50% hatch rate. Got 14 new chicks. They are dong great in their new pen.

Next, I am going to try to hatch in a non-electric, non-flame/stove incubator of my own design. This is the way they used to hatch eggs in the old, old, olden days. I got the idea from the following website. It is highly recommended.

It is hard to tell, My Oct 31, Christmas day, and NYD birds are all together, I am getting 5 or six eggs a day now. One of my old- timer BOs decided to take up residence with the teenagers. She moved in before they started laying, so we figured it would be good for them to have an older hen to show them the ropes as far as laying goes. So far they all lay in a dog house lined with straw that we put in the run since we don't have any nest boxes. It is like a big communal nest box. Now I really have to get with the program and hinge the roof.

Woot! Got my first egg today from my NYD chicks. Actually, I suspect there may be a few pullet eggs in the woods, but I am not going out there and risking lyme disease to find out. :p But it hasn't been as hot the last few days so I left them in the coop. Was rewarded with one tiny green egg! =)
