we do not have chickens yet, but we are trying to do our homework now so that this spring we will start off on the right foot! why are most chicken coops raised? is it just for protection from predators? or is there another purpose?

from Louisiana

I have raised coops for protection from predators and for additional space under the coop during the day time for the chickens.

I built ours (4X6) raised for run space and a smaller footprint in the yard.

A lot of potential predators can and will climb.

Most raised coop are more attractive to the folks with less space and only a few hen's, the suburban pet chicken folks really like them. they fit into backyards well, look ok next to Jr's swingset and aren't a big hassle to build or have shipped. chickens don't seem to mind the confined space so it really works well for those urban pet folks.

Yep, ours is raised to give shade in the attached run. We also built a storage area that is raised so that there are 2 shady areas. I'm so glad we did!

Here's a pic, coop/hen house on the left, storage on the right...

Another reason is if you just have a wood shed on skids or something similar, rats like to nest underneath. Our first coop was a shed, the rest of them are raised. It doesn't elimante rats, but at least you know you don't have a huge colony of them living directly under the coop!

Also, if the coop is not large enough for a person to walk into it, raising the coop makes it easier to clean. Leaning into it is much better on the knees and back than bending over or crouching to reach everywhere inside.

But the space underneath a raised coop is great for shade or shelter for the chickens, too.

The main reason I raised mine, was to NOT give mice and/or rats a nice hidden place to set up housekeeping. They love dark hidden spaces. Got to be able to see under there to know whats going on.
