Well, another one that has been externally pipped died. URG!! I'm down to three!! 1 external pipped, and 2 very active little internal pippers. So far... not good. Lets hope that the next 2 are girls!!
If a duckling has broken the yolk sac, and it still had some left, will it die??.... Just another random question lol
You're no help!

Well, they are purple ALL over, I couldn't resist (I'm sorry, beat me up, i deserve it!) So i candled them, and they moved around like a dead body, smelled horrid, were purple ALL over, never interally pipped, and when i candled them, the shell in the air sac was yellow. These 2 also stopped moving around in the egg 2 days before lockdown. So i'm asuming they are gonners?? They smell horrid!!! EKK!
I would have done the same thing. That's ewwwwww! Lol.

Why are you asking that random question? sorry about the other one.
Their dead, right???? Urg, this is a bad hatch for me :( ............ I couldn't not candle them! I had to know what was up, cause they are all rocking a bunch, except those 2!! They gotta be gone!!
Does anyone else think this is a bad hatch? :(
Hey all,
In preparation for getting my duckies I contacted the local feed stores to find out what foods they carry. I have two locations. Remember, I also raise quail which generally need HIGH protein.
For ducks this is what they recommended:
20% protein flockraiser
18% chick starter
18% triple duty grower
28% gamebird feed
They also said that my quail should do well on all of these but I want to keep them in optimal health and lower protein may not be the best choice. I dunno.
I would love to feed them the same thing of course but I don't know if this is practical. Whatya think?

I feed gamebird starter to my quail and chicks/ducklings. After 2 weeks I start adding oatmeal to the ducklings food until it's 50/50 with the gbs. Sometimes this is what the chickens get, except mixed with scratch, sometimes everyone but the quail and babies get flockraiser. I try to feed everyone the same as much as possible, less different kinds of food to store.

I have started and raised my ducks with purina start n grow (unmedicated), which is 18%. Unfortunatley, when my last set of anconas were 3 weeks old, my feed store was out of that feed and I got the 20% flockraiser. After 2 weeks, my drake developed angelwing. The mazuri starter I just bought specifically for waterfowl is 20%, but also states to switch to grower at 3 weeks. I think the key to remember is 20% is fine for the first 3 weeks, but it is important to cut back protein at that age to avoid angelwing.
Cause i want to know in case it happens. Cause if it does, I don't want to get attached to a baby with that problem.
