Woohoo...I have a butterscotch Call wanting to brood....and I'm happy to let her do so.  The problem is that there is another hen in that pen, that is still laying, and they've been sharing a nest.  Should I move the broody to her own cage, or will I disrupt her?  I have one that I can put her in and totally let her hatch out the babies.  If I leave her, will the other hen make another nest for her own egg laying chores?  I don't want her to quit laying, and I don't want her adding to the broodie's eggs...rather leave her be once I put eggs under her.  I know chickens will push each other out, go back to the wrong nest, etc.

The concave shape of the beak is different between toulouse and african... I expect the chinese would be similar to the african.

My menagerie includes 5 horses, 3 dogs, 4 cats, 32 geese (dewlap toulouse & african) and 10 ducks (muscovy, ancona, cayuga & silver appleyard).

Then about a month ago they wanted to buy 7 doz of the duck eggs and that both of thier kids have allergies to chicken eggs. I laughed and said that they are fertile but have been in the frige. They did'nt care as I was the only one who would sell eating duck eggs. I guess they forgave me and are now very good customers. I thought of refusing them but I wanted to be the bigger person. Glad that your situation has been resolved.

Wow. My boss got a call recently asking if we sold fertile eggs. He went on the whole spiel about how they are brought in twice a day, refridgerated, etc, so there'd be no surprises. The lady laughed and told him she had heard that fertile eggs are healthier for you and that she wasn't worried about finding a baby chick or anything weird. lau.gif

I love it when they're at that awkward stage where they have feathers in the middle of the head and fluff on the sides. Like an old man with a bald spot. gig.gif

I have pools to change out and clean in the Call's condos, today.  And housing to plan for the Runner's once they are ready to go outside.

They lay when they're ready. I've given up trying to figure it out any further than that because everything I'd read was wrong when I tried to apply it to my flock. gig.gif

I got a cayuga egg today, btw. Finally!

Lay them down!  I lost my first ever batch of ducks.  All made it to LD and were alive and great. Nothing hatched... it sucked.  So I tried again.. nothing hatched. That sucked too.  So someone says to lay them down.  3rd batch I lay them on their sides and don't use the turner.  All hatch.  And ever since them I haven't used a turner.  Except for the chickens.

Yes lay them down.

I think the side profile pic is not a great way to asses s the bills..... I think it was meant to assess the breast sizes ~ looks like some could be A's  but a couple I beleive might be some big D's!  gig.gif

I think the ones with the longer bills will taste better with garlic, and the shorter bills will be best grilled with bacon.   Thats the JazminesZoo Standard droolin.gif
