ok Marty that was my hunch.  It would be easy for her to get into something and not the others because I feed treats.  If they missed something and she found it later... I won't feed treats anymore.

I just gave her a long bath.. washed away what I could.  They are IN her as well.  There are no injuries or cuts. Nothing.  It appears as though they are crawling down in her feather shaft.  She loved the bath.  Loved it.  They I put her on a towel and poured vegetable oil on her bottom.  I don't know if that will work or not.  Is there anything else that kills maggots?

She actually perked up and drank a little after I did that.  I will give her another bath here in a few hours and see if I see any more, or if the veg oil smothered them.  Also her breastbone is protruding.  She really needs to eat.  I swear if she could have said Thank You she would have.  She was watching me and letting me touch her face with the wash cloth.  We have bonded now.  It's over. lol.

So basically any advice on what kills maggots.  I'm googling too.

Id stick to the oil method, in her weakened state, QJ. The bath and oil will discourage them a lot.  Give her something high fat if she'll eat it, corn meal maybe, with peanut butter rubbed into it.  It will give her quck and long lasting energy, and keep her alive. Mayve add chopped boiled egg too.  Do you have any charcoal?

Why don't sheep shrink in the rain?

Perking up sounds like a good sign. Found this thread for you, threehorses gives some pretty good treatment info on it.

Help please...my pet chicken is infested with maggots. How can I remove them or should I just cull him?

I have a pet chicken that was fine a couple of days ago. I went out side to day to feed him and noticed that his rump was covered in feces. When I went to clean him off, I found hundreds of maggots. I don't know if I should try to remove them or if I should just cull my chicken...I really don't want to do this because I love my pet chicken a lot! Please if anyone can offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

There are NO vets in my area that help chickens...I've already looked and called around. I've already tried to remove some of them, but they are VERY difficult to remove.

And please...no negative comments of how I don't take care of my animals and blah, blah, blah. I care for my animals and that is why I am seeking help.

Thank you all very much :)

The poor thing! This may sound horrible, but it sounds like the chicken had an open wound, and it was exposed for too long without treatment, and has developed gangreen or septicemia. Maggots and leaches normally help alleviate any infection (they are used in medical surgery) but if there are too many, its a problem. Get some betadene, Dettol, savlon, or any other disinfectsnt that you can find, and dab it where the maggots are. It will poison them slowly and kill them off.

THIS NEXT OPTION IS A LIFE SAVER FOR MANY CASES LIKE THIS:

Alternatively, you could go to your local drug store, and buy some pure peroxide. A 40% strangth is good for this case. You take some warm water and cotton wool, or earbuds, and mix about 50ml water, and 50ml peroxide, and dab it on the wound. It will fizz and ooze with puss if the wound is infected, dont worry, it is normal. Doctors use this in severe cases with patients that have chronic infections in open wounds, gangreen, or septicemia. Its the Ultimate bacterial killer and it works.

1. Dab some on the open wound
2. Wait 2 mins, and rinse it well with water.
3. Dab it again
4. Rinse it again.
5. Repeat this at least 3 times a day until the maggots and infection (pussing & oozing) is gone.

Make sure to rinse it off well when you are done Dabbing it on the wound. This has worked miracles for many people, and animals.
Seeming that there is no Vet close to you, this is the best thing that you can do for it. Dont kill it, it would be cruel. If its still alive, i believe it has a fighting chance.

Jerry- Quail babies are pretty cute too.

P1070325.JPG

And resilient. Since I already had the one that hatched a few days ago in with the ducklings for company I put the new babies in there too. Found the scraggly looking one smashed under the water dish, thought it was dead. It was FLAT. Picked it up and it was still breathing, so put it in a cup and back in the incubator. It perked up and dried off, and it's not very fluffy now but running around with the others just fine.

BTW, when I took out the baby since I had the incubator open I checked goose egg, and it's internally pipped! celebrate.gif

They hog all the peas when I give treats, and get away with it because they pretty much climb into my lap and I can't tell them no.

Thanks peeps.  I just got her to eat some apple sauce.  Not much but at least it was something.  Treating the botulism with molasses water.  If that's what it is.  I don't have hydrogen peroxcide.  does blue kote kill maggots?
