Now that I think about it, mine were flighty little ducklings. Once they started laying their demeanor changed quite a bit. I haven't had cayuga or SA to compare them to though, just khakis, pekins ( I didn't have very long, mine were loud messy skittish pigs), calls, and mutts. smile.png

Non Poultry Questioins : PARENTING ADVICE NEEDED

so, my gifted 12 year old has been lying about getting homework done, and today for state assessment testing, she did her test in 5 minutes flat, refused to go check it like the teacher asked, and get the 2nd LOWEST grade in the class.  Now, she hates this subject, but as a gifted student, I expect "c" equivalents min. even in her worst subject.  This is like an F.

So, instead of killing her, or beating her, which I never do, how do I make the punishment fit the crime?  Shes stubborn, defient, and is mostly unaffected by punishment.  Her favorite things are reading, gymnastics, theatre, and her new room.  I'm thinking about making her sleep in the hall until she reads and writes three good papers in the three subjects geography/historiy/government that she blew off so bad today.  (She let down the teachers who've worked very hard to help her get focused and do well - she has severe ADHD and is gifted besides as well as lowering the average for her entire class)  I'm also thinking about keeping her out of gymnastics this month.  I'm also going to make her write apology letters to the teacher, principle, and class she let down.  (we attend catholic school, and its a very close group)

Will somebody with experience here please offer me some advice?  Shes my oldest, and makes me feel like I don't know anything about parenting.

Why don't sheep shrink in the rain?

Why is there brail at drive up ATMs??

Why are their floatation devices instead of parachutes in my airplain seat???

If a tree falls in the woods and my husband doesn't hear it, am I still wrong????

I don't have any good advice, my girls are all still pretty young. How hard would it be to take everything but her bed out of her room and take off the door? Then let her earn it all back. Or go make her clean duck poop. Punishment might not affect her much, but being a 12 year old girl manual labor shoveling up poo might. lau.gif I think the apology letters are a great idea. hugs.gif

If you can't come up with anything else, I have a bratty 2 year old you could make her babysit for punishment. big_smile.png

Marty, you have many options for her punishment. I love the letter writing idea. The paper writing idea as well. Removing her belongings is good, but removing her bedroom door, well that's even better. No privacy at all then.

Taking gymnastics away might be good, but is that her main physical activity? If so it might not be good as it helps her burn off energy and with ADHD probably helps her be more focused.

That is odd to me.  From everything I have read/seen, Anconas are supposed to be one of the easiest breeds to establish flocks with.  They are not supposed to have pecking order issues like most other breeds?  Of course correct me if I am wrong.  I haven't had any problems introducing mine.  The bigger ones will occasionally peck the smaller ones in the beginning if they get too close but after a couple days there is harmony.  Call me crazy but 3 days ago I introduced my week olds to my 9 and 4 week olds and the older ones pecked a bit but never injured them and the 4 week olds completely excepted them.  Today they all get along great.  What am I doing differently?  IDK?  More space outdoors?  I let them free range throughout the day and I did coop them seperatly the first night because the big ones werent 100% comfy with the babies yet.  The second night they cooped together fine though.  Hmm....I dunno.

My Anconas from Worth it farms are very friendly.  They will come up to me when I call and eat out of my hands but I don't do the whole lap bird thing.   I doubt they would let me pick them up anymore but I really have no desire to.  Maybe it has something to do with my busy toddler.  She is constantly chasing them (even though I tell her not to) and playing with them.  Maybe this is desensitizing their skittishness?  I have no experience from the other breeders.  I am absolutely clueless why your birds would be making each other bleed??  Very weird.  I hope they can work it out.   hugs.gif

I am not the best with advice and every kid is different but how do you think she would react if you gave her the option to decide her own punishment.  I have seen friends do this with their kids and 9 times out of 10 they generally pick a worse punishment than the parent would.  Sorry you are going through this.  We all just want the best for our kids.  hugs.gif

Hey Marty, sorry to hear of your problems.  That is one of the many, many, many reasons I chose to only have 4-legged-kids. wink.png

My menagerie includes 5 horses, 3 dogs, 4 cats, 32 geese (dewlap toulouse & african) and 10 ducks (muscovy, ancona, cayuga & silver appleyard).

The punishment might depend on why she did it.  Has she told you why?

My girls are 21 now, and I'll never forget being so mad at one of them...until I heard what else was going on.  At 12, there are so many emotions, hormones, and craziness going on.  Girls are just plain mean, and our girls tested us fiercely at that age, just trying to find their boundaries.

It's a sensitive age.  I don't envy you.   hugs.gif

When my girls were about ten, a wise cousin told me this:  Make sure your self esteem is very high, and very strong BEFORE your girls are teenagers.  Because when they're teenagers, your self esteem will take a beating.

She was so right.

Eyeheart, no clue! I have now raised (into juvenile stage) african and utility toulouse goslings, cayugas, silver appleyards and anconas.  I saw aggressive wing biting from the africans around a month of age, but it was more like a horse herd determining rank situation that resolved itself after a few days.  They also didn't seem to have a nose/taste for blood, per se, like this ancona drake does.  I watched him eat up a drop of blood on the floor after biting the last victim earlier today.

I want to take the 5 week olds (which includes the bully ancona) over to pasture today and turn them out with the 10 week olds. Then I would assume that the younger ones would follow older ones back to coop at night and be ok?

What do you guys think???

Move that boy on ASAP! You do not want to continue to breed that kind of behavior.

The Anconas are really not known for being skittish. My Anconas will come up to be sprayed by the hose when I'm cleaning pools and they will come running to get all the worms that were under the pool. The 8-12 week old Anconas have to be pushed along to go to their house because they are not afraid of people. My adults herd really well, but thats because they are already in their house when it gets dark for bedtime anyway. I don't know why yours are so skittish, but don't hold it against the breed because I promise they are not all like that. Sorry you have gotten such a bad impression of the breed.
