Congrats on the first egg! I'd eat, just to check for fertility and because first eggs don't always hatch well.

Well, seeing that you have an empty bator and just lost 32 birds.  WTH?  Hatch them. :)

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?

Well at least all my ducks & goslings were in a different area.  So I lost my "pretty" chickens.   I did sell alot the 2 weeks prior so that was a good thing I guess.

Since you lost chickens, all the more reason to set more chicken eggs.

Glad your waterfowl are ok!  Having my dogs get any of my birds is a huge fear of mine (not that I'd blame the dog).  Don't want to cross that bridge any time soon.

My menagerie includes 5 horses, 3 dogs, 4 cats, 32 geese (dewlap toulouse & african) and 10 ducks (muscovy, ancona, cayuga & silver appleyard).

It only takes once, and it happens fast..... I was home, & I didn't hear anything either ! The only reason I found out was it was time for me to feed her, and I called & she didn't come running.  So I went to the front door & she came running in.

She was not outside for long, & no I do not blame her, she is after all a bird dog, with a prey drive, and she have hunter lines too boot.  They must have been looked at like squeaky toys with wings.  Because she didn't "mame" any.  (& obviosly I have re-done the pen so it won't ever happen again)

I completely agree, Jaz.  Seems like it is not an "if" but rather a "when" situation when owning birds.

Wow, that is one hell of a week.  Hope next week is better for you.  At least we're in for a beautiful weekend.

Me, too!  I keep my pens as secure as I can, but I know that unless I keep the birds in a bunker, they aren't 100% safe.  I'd rather let them enjoy the grass in a large area than a cement pad in a small area, though, so I keep my fences strong and cover the top and hope that my dog never figures out that he could dig his way in if he really wanted to.

I think it would be awful if my own dog killed my birds.  My daughter would have a really hard time with that.  Hopefully, he'll stick to snakes and rodents.

You can't really blame them, though, it's just their instincts kicking in.
