Well, and your birds all know each other because they snuggle the fence together.

I may try it in a few days, then, when I am not so busy with gimpy girl. How is your call baby doing with her silky buddy?
My menagerie includes 5 horses, 3 dogs, 4 cats, 32 geese (dewlap toulouse & african) and 10 ducks (muscovy, ancona, cayuga & silver appleyard).

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?

Went out last night to lock everyone up at 8 and a cat ran out of the chicken yard. Heard a kitten meowing, couldn't find it. Checked my trap this morning and here it is. I think it's only around 3 months old, can't get a very good pic because it's scared and I'm scared of it, lol. Guessing there's a dumped/stray momma trying to feed her kittens, which would explain why they are so desperate to get the chicks/ducklings. Can't tell if this kitten is just scared of the trap, but it seems pretty wild. After it calms down I'm going to see how friendly it is, if I can tame it and keep it from killing my chicks when it has a full belly I might just have myself a "coop" cat to chase away other strays eventually.

QJ-

Transmission and Epidemiology:
The disease is highly contagious and readily transmitted among chickens. The virus matures into a fully infective, enveloped form in the epithelium of the feather follicle, from which it is released into the environment. It may survive for months in poultry house litter or dust. Dust or dander from infected chickens is particularly effective in transmission. Once the virus is introduced into a chicken flock, regardless of vaccination status, infection spreads quickly from bird to bird. Infected chickens continue to be carriers for long periods and act as sources of infectious virus. Shedding of infectious virus can be reduced, but not prevented, by prior vaccination. Unlike serotypes 1 and 2, which are highly contagious, turkey herpesvirus is not readily transmissible among chickens (although it is easily transmitted among turkeys, its natural host). Attenuated serotype 1 strains vary greatly in their transmissibility among chickens; the most highly attenuated are not transmitted. Marek’s disease virus is not vertically transmitted. The incidence of Marek’s disease is quite variable in commercial flocks and depends on strain and dose of virus, age at exposure, maternal antibody, host gender and genetics, other concurrent diseases, and several environmental factors including stress.

It's not passed via mother to egg to chick, so your hatchlings will be mareks free. I haven't been able to find if your existing birds can be carriers and infect new birds or not, but I think they are, at least for awhile. I do know there is a vaccine, which you could give to new chicks if so, to keep them from getting it. If you lose another chick I'd send it for a necropsy before vaccinating everyone though, just to be sure that's what it was.
