Is it illegal to own a Canadian Goose?

What you said is RIDICULOUS. They can be aggressive when protecting their young, as any bird or anyone would be but, they do not lunge and bite. They give a warning to back off. If you do not have the brains to back off, then you deserve a bite. However, we feed Canada Geese regularly and they are not aggressive at all and would never bite us. One even allowed my husband to pet it once, although usually, we only sit by them without touching. To us, they are gentle and sweet-natured. If they are being aggressive toward someone, that someone is deserving of it.

I keep one with my duck too... Because he has no wings. He able to leave if he wants but he chooses to stay. He swims around our 60 acre pond and comes when called. Wow very similar story to yours! Mines name is Steven

I have a Canadian Goose that has lived on our farm for 20+ years now. he can fly but chooses to stay with my tame geese. His mate was killed by a fox and he stayed behind when his group left. He now has a mate in my tame geese and the produce little ones just about every year that are half Toulouse and Canadian.

they are so beautiful! we have a rescue canada thats free to leave whenever he would like but he stays with our geese and ducks. how i wish i could raise one of those beautiful crosses!! i'd have a whole flock! lol

Thanks for rescuing it.

Here's what I know about the U.S., but things might be different in Canada.

In the U.S., it is not illegal to own a Canada goose per se, but it is illegal to keep a wild Canada goose. You might think about handing him over to a wildlife rehabber if you can find one close to you. Or, at least contacting one and asking about it. It might be too late to fix his wing if it's been 5 weeks, but they may have been able help sooner if he was brought in earlier.

I Just Went Threw This = In NY it is legal to own a Canadian geese if not caught from the wild and you yourself have to have a Domestic Game Bird Breeder License to buy from a breeder/hatchery and only coast 40.00 for 5 year personal license its 200.00 for a commercial license . http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/wildlife_pdf/dgbap16.pdf

This is much like Missouri, and to get the license here a conservation officer has to come inspect where you will keep and how many you will have etc. I was told that you can not keep more than what you 'have' according to their records and can not sale or giveaway unless you get a breeder's license. You also have to consent to receiving yearly inspections of their housing/ review if you are staying within the rules.
On the way to lunch one day I saw one that had a hurt wing. While I was debating how I could get it to help I saw a conservation officer quickly drive up and before I could get his attention he ran after it with a gun and shot it :( I told him I would have happily nursed it... We worked with a state nursery when I was little and often nursed baby, opossum's, birds, squirrel's for a few days till we could take them there (3+hours away). I saw everything from dear to roadrunners up close and cage free as they worked to get them back in nature. If we're able and willing I see no problem helping a animal in this way. What beautiful pictures of kindness!

Does anybody want a canadian goose, my daughter brought it home 4 years ago, she said it was all by itself. But now we have to move out of our house into an apartment. We cant take it there. We think its a boy, was told it was a girl so we really dont know which. But i would love to see Ducky with his own kind. He can never be released to the wild. He would have no clue how to take care of him self. He can fly and hes been doing that alot lately. I live in Delaware, if there is anybody out there that could take him in, I dont know what im going to do if i cant find him a home. Please someone

Hi, @Birdy -- so sorry it took me so long to reply here! I just saw this for the first time today. Do you still need help with this? I may know someone in the area that could help, not sure though. :) But if it's still a potential situation, I'm totally happy to help this goose get a very nice and safe home to live out his days! :)))))
