Close call with stray Pit Bull in our back yard. Sad Update! pg 7

Just finished building the silkie coop out of wooden pallets tonight, and moved them in. They were enjoying their enclosed run & my big chickens were all over the yard. Told hubby, I was off to the store to get milk, (swear we can't keep milk in our house!) Got home in 1 hr. girls are playing out front, so they were helping me bring in the groceries. Was about to get the next load, when my oldest says, "Momma, there is a big white dog in the back yard. My heart dropped to my knees, because my chickens are free ranging back there. Was going to put them away when I got back from the store.
I race out back, looking for the dog & checking for my babies. I spot the dog, who is at the back of the yard, racing back & forth, while the neighbors dogs are barking at it.

I scream at the dog, and my chickens hear me, so what do they do, come running towards me. barnie  I am in panic mode trying to get my chickens to the run, before the dog runs towards them. He runs around them, towards the corner of the fence near the house, so he is away from my babies. I get everyone in the run, do a quick head count, and then start screaming for my hubby. He comes out, and starts calling the Sheriff, while I try to get everyone in their coop & lock them all up. Hubby is trying to figure out how this dog got into our yard, because if there is a way out, my older dog Marty (pom mix)will find it (his nick name is Houdini). Sheriff arrives, but has no way to transfer the dog, and animal control is not there till TUESDAY! somad

When my hubby got too close to the dog, it growled at him, so they had to let the darn dog loose. There is no way we are keeping that dog in our yard till then. I told hubby, time to get a BB Gun. The Sheriff can't figure out how the dog got in either, but now I am freaked. I only let my babies out when I am home, hubby & kids were home & our dogs had access to the back yard. So tomorrow I am checking all the fencing.

Our roo, Owl, has our dogs intimidated, they leave Owl alone, and Do Not Mess With His Ladies! thumbsup
I am just thankful my babies are all safe, but my false sense of security is now gone.

Gosh, I wonder if someone put him in there, with bad intentions in mind.  That's terrible!  So glad you or your family or your chickens didn't get hurt!

Could have jumped the fence....

Why didn't the cop shoot the dog if it was showing aggression????

4 hrs later, it came back! Hubby went out to check the storm progress, and the darn dog was on our back deck & growled at my hubby.
Called the police again & there is nothing they can do. somad

Shoot it.  You've called the cops twice, its showed aggression twice. Shoot it and be done with it.

Next time if it is on your property and showing aggression to your family shoot it. What if it was chasing one of your kids instead of the chickens? It's legal to protect your livestock, especially with an aggressive dog. If anyone asks, it growled and lunged at you. Or better yet just sss and MIND THE LAST S.

Nelllabean is right. I don't understand the police--the game warden here will put the lead to them and so won't the dog warden. The dog warden says she carries more weight around here than the cops--make some calls to them.  Good luck, hope you get something figured out before you lose a chicken or someone gets bitten.

How tall is your fence?  My neighbor's pit  routinely jumps their 5 foot fence with at least 2 feet to spare.  He looks like a gazelle as he sails over it.  They've had to tie him up in their fenced yard to keep him in.
