My NEW Breeding Pens

We took apart some pallet tops (they look like a window and are stapled and come apart easy) cut them to 12 in lengths and made 12x12 panels for the nest boxes we also cut some longer boards to run the width of the coop to hold the nest material in place. We used those same pallet tops as a partial divider wall and Covered that with thick black plastic for privacy. Easy to replace if it does not work or hold up.

I need to put the baby to bed so more later.....
The plastic beside the nesting boxes. I THOUGHT that you had said that it was tearing and were going to have to find a replacement... I might have Misread the thread....

Quote: The plastic BETWEEN the pens is still there. I don't think I have had to replace that. The plastic on the BOTTOM has been replaced a few times. I am using 6mil plastic but they still cut through it. In the next pens I will put a wire floor. I did take all those nest boxes out. They only used one box anyway and I replaced it with a plastic box I found on clearance. It even had a top. Works much better and I have sand in it so the eggs are cleaner too. They can't tip it over and the if anyone gets on top they can't poop in the nest.

I put a paper feed bag under the roosts and put sand under and over the bag (kind of holds it in place) and then I can take the bag out to clean the poop. I can also get in there with a hoe and scrape anything out now.

Hi! Can you give me full dimensions of everything? I'm hoping to make something like this for naked necks or cochins.
Did you ever have predators?
Also do you have an estimate on the cost of building it?

I think I put costs in this post somewhere. Just a few hundred dollars when I first built it but when I added the roof the price shot up.

Dimensions? Pallets come in lots of sizes. I just picked pallets that were the same size for the foundation and then the sides were made with different pallets. I just used what I had.

Predators - yes. Last year or so we had some young racoons that made several raids. Took some time to figure out I was even under attach and then how they were getting in. Found one with her head gone and feathers outside the pens so I just assumed she stuck her head out. Then we found another dead in the pen, just thought she died. BUT when my husband found 5 dead in one pen that was only a predator. Made a couple of other raids before we caught them. 1 possum 3 coons and no more attacks. Snakes a time or two but they only got eggs.

Good luck!

They are holding up quite well really. I would only make a few changes to my original. Chickens are a little harder than horses on pens. The poop is eating through some of the wood. One leg has come off completely but is not causing a problem.

I am hoping to build more of these and I will make some changes. I will probably make a new thread when I do build again. Some things I will probably use pressure treated wood. Probably use wire floors in the coop part and have longer and wider runs.
I just bought a spray can of "peelable rubber" paint. Here is the link to it: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Rust-Oleum-Peel-Coat-Silver/52624659 . It says it is a"Rust-Oleum Peel Coat is a peelable rubber coating that enables endless customization for vehicles. This premium formula is easy to peel, safe to wash and can be applied to metal, plastic, chrome, glass and more. The all-weather coating also protects against rust and road debris". I got it in white so it will be cooler. I am going to spray it in a small coop I am building now to see how it works, for easy cleaing and keeping the floor from rotting so quickly. I have a bath mat in one coop and yardsale find yoga mat in another that works pretty good. I just pull them out every few days and dump them in the compost pile.

I have seen the peelable runner on infermercials and in 5 gallon containers at Lowe's but never in a spray can that was affordable. Hoping it works.

Going to rain tomorrow, but we are going to try to get the other outside wall up. If not we are going shopping for gutters and fencing maybe groceries. Any suggestions for fencing over the TOP of the runs? I was planning on 2 x 4 welded wire.
I love it!! I would love to see the finished pens! Do you have a blue print/lay of this set up please? 😊
