I have a flock of 8 pullets. 6 came from the same "farm" a few weeks ago all from 5 -8 months old (3 Red Stars, two Black Sex Link and one Wyndotte) and two Australorp's ( 7 months old ) came from a different owner a couple weeks ago.

One of the Red Stars has a runny nose and the drainage does have a foul smell. I know this is supposed to be an indicator for Coryza. This hen is otherwise apparently healthy eating well free ranging and very active. One of my Australorp's has been constantly sneezing and acting a little sick but still eating and drinking and free ranging just noticeably less active. The odd thing is that the Australorp has no drainage from her nose just the sneezing and also perhaps a little paleness to her comb. I did notice her picking at herself and after inspecting noticed she had some lice.

I have dusted the hens with diatomaceous earth and also sprinkled it in the coop and run. Also I started adding a little Grape fruit seed extract and Colloidal Silver to their water as antibacterials. I am reluctant to use the Antibiotic that I bought ( Duramycin-10 / Tetracycline ) because it is not intended for layers, another poster suggested a 21 day withdrawal period and still others indicate that it is not a very good antibiotic anyway. I have found a product called Denegard ( Tiamulin ) online but it does not seem to be available for Poultry in the US. The main thing I like about this product is that is states that there is a zero day withdrawl period for eggs! But I can not find a place to buy it in a small quantity for such a small flock.

I do not intend to introduce new birds now and if this is not a serious threat to life for the flock than I am fine with an all-in all-out approach. I will just keep this flock intact for the next few years. Please help with suggestions of what to do

If you suspect coryza, sulmet will treat it, otherwise I recommend that you cull them. Denagard only treats mycoplasma diseases in poultry. I also recommend sevin dust to kill lice/mites on chickens, dust their house as well. Repeat dusting in 10 days. Here's a link to respiratory diseases in poultry. Scroll down to Infectious Coryza and read about it, including treatments:

Hi there im currently madicating a flock with coryza at the moment.. Symptoms are:

* Runny Nose
* Sneezing
* Bubbles in the eyes ( usually only in 1 eye)
* Swollen eye ( i used eye drops for conjunctavis 1 drop twice a day)
* not interested in eating or drinking
* Lathargic
* Temprature ( I give Baby asprin)
* Apparantly they get a Horrible smell from there nose but mine havent!

Baytril is the best antibiotic for this and you can buy it online ive been told. Mine are on 0.3mls once a day of baytril.
You could probebly use a different antibiotic im not totaly sure.. Hopefully yours dont have Coryza and dont hesitate to ask me for any advice, Tracy...

No foul odor = no coryza. Most likely you're dealing with MG. MG symptoms are similar to coryza without the foul odor. Antibiotics work temporarily with MG til resistance is built. Consider purchasing denagard for treating MG. There is no withdrawal and no resistance. You can type "denagard" in the BYC search box and read about it if you wish. It can be purchased at QC Supply.

I know the smell is present suggesting Coryza but is it serious if the hen is still eating and active. She does not have any swelling, drainage from eyes etc.. I have isolated her but I am sure the rest of the flock has already been exposed.
Is there any issue with using eggs from birds with Coryza or that have recovered from it? It may be that the natural supplements I am using are keeping it from progressing and or being passed around? I have heard of sulmet. Dp you know the withdrawl period for eggs with Sulmet?
By culling do you mean the whole flock or just the sick birds? It seems that if one is sick that they have already all been exposed. I have also heard that the incidence of death with Coryza is low. So....could I not just ride it out and simply not introduce any new birds to the flock?
After a few years I could cull these hens and wait a while before getting a new flock in order to make sure the Coryza is gone from the environment?.....still learning I just hate the idea of culling these hens if they may recover.

How soon would I know if the Coryza is progressing to be life threatning? This hen has had the runny nose for probably a week or two.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for the imput, i realy hope its mycloplasma at least you have a chance with that.. I ve just picked there medication up from the vets. they have to have 0.5mls Tylon injection on one side of the breast then wait a day and do the other injection in other side of there breast and thats it, would you recommend 3 days?? Ive got a 100ml bottle so not going to run short! any input on how to inject would be good too please....
