Dominique or Barred Rock??

I guess a lot of people know the difference, but I don't... I have two of these girls and they are GORGEOUS!! My dad went back to school (and I'm so proud of him!) for horticulture and one of the girls in his class is moving to DC so she gave us 10 already laying hens, a chicken tractor, 65 egg cartons, and some feed FOR FREE! These ones were in that bunch. She didn't know what they were.

Great question!  I was told that my two are Dominiques, but I have no idea.  What is the difference?  Are Dominique Roos more aggressive?  Ziggy is about 7/8 months old and so far, he is ok.

Do the hens of Dominiques have more than a single comb?

Yours is a Barred Rock. They single combs -- the one row of "spikes" -- while Dominiques have rose combs -- like a flat bumpy cushion type. aoxa's pictures show you the difference vey well. I don't think she is mixed. She's just hatchery quality, which varies from bird to bird. smile
