You don't really need hardware cloth the entire height of the coop. That would be very expensive among other things. The primary reason for it down low is to keep raccoons from reaching through and grabbing a bird or a fox or dog etc from chewing through the chicken wire to get one. If the HC is 3' up the sides and you have some sort of protective apron around the outside to prevent diggers, you have the biggest issues covered. Raccoons can climb, and once above the HC, could reach through, but as long as there are no roosts etc right next to the sides of the coop, there would be no place for the chickens to be within reach of a coon or any other animal reaching through. I WOULD replace the chicken wire or cover it but I would use basic welded wire fencing attached with poultry staples.
This will protect your birds from all but the most determined predator.
