Australia - Six states..and that funny little island. - Page 59

How amusing! tongue.png
But the 5 buck chickens thing reminds me - back at Christmas, I bought one of those Oxfam unwrapped chickens to give to some friends. Some of the options were really creative, but I hadn't much money at the time and felt too stingy to spend more than $10. lol.png I'm glad we don't celebrate Christmas with presents, otherwise I'd be buying stuff for many more people than just a friend or two.

Lost my male runner on the weekend. Poor little bugger put a good fight but he couldn't make it in the end. No more losses or attacks now so we seems to for now be keeping whatever got into them at bay. I am happy about that. Still nothing from the black muscovey yet but she is sitting sted fast on the eggs so we will see. I have not gone down the line of an electric fence yet as we have lots of koalas that live on the block and i would not like one of them to get a jolt from one.

hugs.gif Oh Satay,I am so sorry for your loss. As you say at least you haven't lost anymore, but I am sorry to hear of your boy. Hopefully your muscovy will be bringing new babies into the world soon as a consolation. Chickens and ducks are a magnet to predators, we disposed of a feral cat a few weeks back, and I am pretty certain that there was another one sniffing around last night. The dogs were going mad around the paddock when I let them out for their night time pee, chasing around all the dark corners ,barking and sniffing, that is usually a sure sign that something is around. Down to the Council for another cat trap we go!

hi Rachel

Your chooks look like Araucanas to me.

I am in agreeance with Michael. Your chooks are Araucanas. I have them too white and the lavender. No rooster left for me now so no more of the breeding of them til i can find another rooster some where.

Our main predator problem is foxes around here. But they don't often come during the day, so I've taking to shutting my chickens safely away at night - even if I think the coop's secure, it probably isn't it, so the chickens are put into adapted dog kennels at night (I added a door with a lock). I've lost about nine or ten chickens and four ducks to foxes in the past year.

Your right there Rachel. foxes seem to be the main problem for many of us with fowl. Hope i have managed to keep mine at bay now if that is what it was.

The only complete fox protection is concrete and steel - and an electric wire around the runs at fox nose height.

Thread Starter

I posted this in Random Ramblings...but since this is the aussie thread..

For those of you with facebook-    last night I found a pets photo comp and uplaoded a photo before I realised there was only 3 days to go.  Some animals already has over 1700 votes.  Anyway- click on the link...follow the instructions- and you will see my Flippy duck in her beautiful Purple raincoat.   I know she wont win- but at least a few people may start to look at ducks in a different way.  They arent just farm animals- they can make great pets too.

Thanks in advance..  smile.png

Little bit of an update. My black muscovey had one baby hatched and 1 pipping last night. Have not been out this morning to look yet as it is raining. Will try to get some pictures later this arvo once J gets home from school. She is going to be a great mama by the looks of it as she wanted to tear my arm off last night when I was checking on her.
Have voted and shared on my wall Ducky. You do have the most adorable runners smile.png
