Not as such Ducky, I bought light sussex eggs and they hatched light sussex. But when I bred a male and female together. I got light,dark coronation and red and buff all from the same pair of light. (not all in one hatch )but each time I hatch them. Kinda odd but funny too.

PrincessChooky (nickname from my husband from waaay before we actually had any!), Hallidays Point, mid north coast of NSW in between Forster and Taree. We have 3 very friendly and people oriented Road Island Reds. There were 4 but one disappeared last June. We like to think that she just hopped either into someone's car with them (a hazard at our place if you leave the car door open for any reason) or she joined another flock nearby. There were never any feathers etc found anywhere, so either of these options is likely. We do have a large number of predatory birds though (wedge tails and sea eagles) so that is another option. They are free range during the day (small acreages) and our neighbours tolerate them in their gardens also as they get eggs as well periodically. I get between 1-3 eggs most days. Rose is the most reliable layer with Daisy (the only yellow one) the least reliable and Hyacinth in the middle. I have just joined this forum as I found it when I had an emergency situation with Hyacinth potentially eating some rat bait. She didn't get sick, but I was reassured by the information that I was able to find.

  

The pale coloured pullet popped out of a Barnevelder egg. The mother hen(a Barnevelder),was shut in a pen with the Barnevelder rooster,she laid 10 eggs,and we removed the roo and she sat tight on the eggs. 8 hatched,and this one appeared?? It's a mystery as to what happened,the egg was exactly the same as a Barnevelder egg,dark brown and speckled. Obviously she has Malay in her,but how did the Malay Rooster manage to get in to her pen?? Mystery,but a nice looking little pullet and I am going to let her run with the Malays,and see what eventuates.

Welcome Princesschooky. So glad your hens were alright after the rat bait scare.
Wooklet thats a pretty bird no matter how it happened. Is she very thin like in the photo? I have old english games and they are skinny like that but nowhere near as tall. Maybe your malay was super well endowed and could reach through the pen

That's about the only explanation,Satay! To answer your question,yes,she is a skinny type of bird-all legs,it will be interesting to see how she turns out-and how the offspring turn out too!

 

Sorry, Princesschooky,I should have said  . I put rat baits down in the house last week,and I think that one has died in the bedroom,felt sick with the smell all night,will have to go on a hunt this morning,because I can't take any more of it!!
 

That's it! No more baits! I spent yesterday trying to track down the dead mouse smell. Couldn't find them but found this huge nest under the cupboard=they had made themselves right at home,tissues,straw,cardboard,even some old rat bait boxes-how's that for thumbing your nose!!I cleared out the nest,sprinkled some baking sode,vacuumed and hoped that would be it! Last night I opened the bedroom door,and was nearly knocked out by the smell,  10.00 o'clock at night I start to rip the room apart,bed was pulled out,drawers pulled right out,bottom taken off the wardrobe,and finally I found them,yes,two of them,right under the wardrobe-no wonder it was so bad. So out came the baking powder,the vacuum cleaner,it was midnight before I had finished!! I actually felt really sick while I was doing it,the smell of death is the worst in the world! Ah well, the bedroom had a long overdue clean out. I have ordered 4 "humane"traps on the Internet,just imagine if they had gone into the wall to die and I couldn't get them! Blocked up the hole with steel wool too,a least I found that!

Welcome princesschooky! The nickname I gave my cat before I ever had chooks is "chooky"! He's now 13, and I still call him that - it doesn't seem to confuse the lay-dees too much!

hi - i m glad that school is back in and I posted my pics of the winners at the royal Sydney Easter show in another post if your interested.

 

I found some very interesting chooks there.

 

Oh and I found 6 eggs in two locations in my garden ! they were still good but Im glad I found where they were. I was concerned about the lack of eggs from my 5 girls.

I will see what i can do to get some pics for your wooklet. My camera is ancient so have to wait for teenager to be co operative enough to up load them for me from his phone lol. No mouse problem here we have a cat and he does his job really well thankfully. We do get the massive bush rats that creep me out something bad but if ty is out side he will get them too. Finally getting 2 eggs a day now. Have no clue who is laying them though.(hoping that the brahmas are finally laying) I guess you get that when you have as many hens as i do.
