Is it cruel to have chickens if they can't free range?

We allowed ours to free range for 10 months then on Friday a hawk got my precious Lavender Americuan. They now will be in the run unless we are out with them. We have a very large run and I try and make sure they have things to keep them occupied. I can't wait for summer I am home for 10 weeks and they can go back to exploring again. I can risk them being killed.
