de-crowing a Roo

I hope you find the answers you are looking for. I know I have a Roo, I can't have. I have tried to sound proof his own blacked out dog house, to try to keep him quite until day light, NO luck he starts around 5am. It is not cruel to try to help an animal keep it's head. In my case he was supposed to be a she and have not been able to find him a home. Good luck.

This is not something I would do, But as a child I remember my neighbors keeping roosters that didn't crow. They kept them in really short cages cause I think they need to extend their necks to crow. I don't think they meant to be cruell or anything like that, they just saw chickens as Tamales!
 
For any living creature it comes down to quality of life not quantity of life.
you could "save a roosters head" by putting him in a tiny cage for the rest of his miserable life- he will never be grateful for this

surgery should be performed only if medically necessary , not for cosmetic or convenience purposes and should NEVER be performed by anyone less than completely qualified

Empathy is not something everyone has naturally , but it is something you can learn and appreciate as you experience different things in life.
 
I am guessing the original poster has quit looking at at the answers already. She did not ask for personal opinions, just answers. Sheesh. I would like to know only to know. If it were humanely possible, just imagine all the people with stealth coops who can't have a roo but would love one. I personally love to hear and see my roos, but if I had to give them up because of the noise and there was a way to de crow that was guaranteed I would jus to keep my boys. I don't think it can be considered any less humanize than declawing a cat. I mean you amputate the last nuckle of the cats foot and cause it arthritis in its feet.

Check my post (#3) on this thread for the name of a veterinarian that has developed a a technique for decrowing a rooster. Your vet could do a phone consultation with him to learn about the technique.
 
I was looking for the same thing. I don't know if you have heard of this or not, seeing as you posted this so long ago but I found a solution.
