Little Giant Incubator Tricks

How much space between the lid & the fan??

I put my fans spaced at no less than 1/4" to about 1/2" from the lid. This fan is DC fan so I had to run a power adapter too. I make sure the fan blows up onto the lid and not down on the eggs.

This fan is an AC fan so I could wire it into the power of the incubator.

Thanks.
I Have it blowing up, left about a 1/4 inch space & can feel air coming out the top by the lid but also feel air I guess being forced back down through the fan. I'm going to expand the space to about 1/2 inch or so & see if that helps. Thanks again

Sometimes I tip the fan, so the fan is angled and the air blows up at an angle creating flow that is stronger in one direction over another; it also effects the internal temps if the plug is out, so I monitor the temps closely when I make this alteration.

Might be a silly question but ...When you add mason jars with water is there a risk a chick could drown in them?

Im setting my first eggs tomorrow morning. Fighting the humidity right now. Staying at 50%..need it to go down a bit.

I just had my first hatch in the LG with the automatic turner. I wish I had seen this before,I'm gonna get a fan for the next batch of egg. When I took the turner out just before the eggs hatched I put a saucer with a wet sponge, its too hard to tell when to add water and if you miss, it runs out the bottom of the incubator making a mess. It went pretty well overall, out of 32 eggs I have 25 happy healthy chicks!

THe mason jars are filled , then put on the lid and screw it shut. THe 1 quart size lay on their sides. YOu can fit several. IT also takes away from egg space and no turner can be used. THe jar of water is a heat sink. If you need water for moisture I use a tall baby food jar with a narrow opening and the sponge is cut to fit inside. IT is too tall for a chick or poult to fall in. Good of you to think of the chicks drowning-- an important point when putting in water sources.

50% is likely to be too high. Lots of info all over BYC with suggestions: rice, AC, dehumidifier, fans. Do you have a diagram of the air cells at 7 14 and 18 days?? Very important to hit these marks during your incubation time. Several different diagrams available on the web and on BYC.

I don't add water to my LG. Except in winter. DO you have water in the wells?? Remove the water and it will dry out over a couple days; the stryofoam seems to abosorb some of the water.

Nice job!!!

You will learn what works for you. I can put 4 jars in the corners with sponges poking out to get the humidity up for a few days. I've even put the LG on a slat and poured water into the base up to the holes in the floor. Many ways to do it. SOmeone did a tupperware with holes poked into the lid.
