water bowl heaters. what do you use

I live in south centrail PA. The winters are not usually to bad but last winter it was single digits for a good long time.

I you use a metal chicken waterer or also called a sinlge metal fountain. What do you all use for waterers and how do you keep them from freezing. I usually use a heated metal base.

What about the dog bowls>? or just using rubber pans and nocking the water out each morning and night.....

any suggestions are helpfull.
 
I've been using the heated dog bowls for a couple of weeks. You can use them alone, but I put some old meal dog bowls inside them and just take them out and wash them daily. A gallon sized ice cream pail will work too. The only drawback so far is that they don't hold a lot of water (1 gallon) and it evaporates faster since it is open. Many people on here make cookie tin water heaters--you can look up the threads in the google search above.
 
When I use one , I use the cookie tin with the lamp light kit in it. I can vary the size of the bulb as nec. so that I do not get it too hot. I set the tin on a piece of tile to protect the floor and put a large stainless metal basin on it full of water. You would need to change it everyday to prevent it from growing bacteria. If not use a tsp of clorox for every gal. Or use the vinger method to keep down bacteria. You do not want hot or even warm feeling water. Just not frozen. I found some small night light bulbs and use those in them. Gloria Jean

$13 heated dog bowl that only clicks on to heat when the temps are freezing. I have had good luck with it, don't have to worry about freezing water, and that's one less thing on my plate!

I also use the heated dog bowl, just have to clean it out every day which is a pain after using the 5 gallon bucket with the nipples and not have to worry about them fouling the water (no, not fowling).

I have a Farm Innovators Heated Base for my 2 gal double walled waterer. Works great and kept the water liquid even when the temps were in the teens. It also keeps the waterer off the ground, which keeps stuff out of the water.
