Opinions on which chicks to order? - Page 2

orpingtons, wyandottes, and barred rocks are good chickens for cold weather, speaking of which, wait untill spring. raising chicks in the cold is a bad idea. You could raise them in the house, but after a month they will be getting too big for that and will need to go outside. The sudden change from warm to cold could kill them

I always brood chicks in cold weather in an unheated uninsulated outbuilding. It's simpler to get them acclimated to the cold.
They have an overhead brooder on legs that allows them to move in and out of the heat. They choose their optimum temp.
In a few weeks they don't use the brooder at all and are ready for whatever winter has in store.
I've never lost one to cold. I think they're healthier this way. They certainly feather well. Bacteria doesn't grow when it's cold.
I can't handle the dust indoors not to mention the fact that my wife would kill me in my sleep if I brought animals inside.

They're not on your list but Jersey Giants(brown egg) and Jaerhons(white egg) are great for cold and lay well. JGs come in blue.

Faverolles will give you a pale, creamy colored egg.
