What age do Muscovies start laying and brooding ?

they usually start around 20-24 weeks old (5-6 months) some can take up to 7 months or 28 weeks i dont know why people are saying like 1 year and 2 years heck i had one start as early a 18 weeks

I know this is an old thread. I just would like some clarification. I live in So.Dak. My muscovies will be about 6 months when we have about a foot of snow here, they will wait to start laying until spring right? Sorry if I have asked something that has already been answered 3 times. lol

Correct, we raise them commercially & if they reach laying age during cold months they will just wait until spring. The ones who are already laying when winter comes sometimes they continue to lay for a few weeks into winter. At least that's our experience. I would also provide some protection from the weather especially at night as they can easily get frost bite on their feet if they are always walking on frozen ground, ice or snow. Most other ducks aren't affected but Muscovy are.

MY Muscovy drake got frost bite on his knob this past winter first time ever. It was a brutal winter... Welcome to BYC Wilberfarm..

My Scovy girls that hatch in spring one year don't lay till following spring and the ones laying usually go through molt about now and finish up laying for the year last of Sept early Oct.

this is a dead thread it looks like but i have a musocovy first time laying hen and was curious how many eggs do they normally lay before brooding? she has 8-9 in a nest right now i just dont need 30 ducklings running around

I believe it depends on the duck, some will brood smaller clutches some will co-brood with other females in one large nest....I believe average is 10-14, but I may be wrong.
