Duck sounds like Donkey

Thats too funny !

I am amazed at the distinct and very definate personalities of ducks...

My big drake (Buddy) will hop the fence and walk in thru the patio door and stand there and watch as I chop some greens and mix up their feed.
(kept indoors away from varments)
He won't stray and get distracted by the baby bird pen or across the carpet (he knows better) but he'll stand there and maybe give me one bark to let me know he;s ready to eat and he's willing to help..(uh huh). When I walk out to place the bowls in the pen he'll get anxious because the foods on the other side of the fence and he thinks his mate will get it all...every so often he'll figure out how to get back in but usually he'll stand there and assume the position so I can lift him and set him over the fence...quite the character. His mate is more verbal and less physical...she is like an alarm clock...at 5pm everyday she'll start laughing, get all the other hens doing it and thats MY hint to get in the kitchen and get dinner started ! Shortly after that Buddy shows up to check on me and my progress.

I have to feed the little ones first otherwise the little mallard (just figured out shes mallard) will get impatient and fly thru the house to come help...and land on the counter. First couple of times startled the stuff outta me...so her and her little friend get fed first to avoid any disagreements.
Anyone that thinks ducks are boring just has'nt been close to a duck before....the intelligence and personalities are just as distinct as a dog or cat..or some people I know!

Did'nt mean to insult ducks comparing them to some of my friends...

I'm new to having ducks as pets and I'm curious if both ducks and drakes do the head bobbing? We have 2 Pekin and I'm sure one is a duck but not sure about the other one. Our girl is very loud and vocal the other doesn't quack but I've seen them both bob their heads when they get in the pool.

Both male and female bob their heads. It's cute to watch them do that.

I have two males, a Welsh Harlequin and a Cayuga, and a female Pekin. The Welsh Harlequin and Cayuga are six months old. They have both been doing the honk-whistle or donkey sound accompanied by an arching of the neck. I got the Welsh Harlequin and a Cayuga as company for the Pekin after she wandered onto our property about seven months ago. I had no idea that both would be males, but, so far, they are getting along fine. They are the three amigos. I was searching for an explanation of this sound and I ran across this website. I am assuming that it is some sort of mating behavior or greeting call. Any insights are welcome here too. I am relatively new to ducks so this is a learning experience.

Mine too. I have two male ducks, a Welsh Harlequin and a Cayuga, and they both make that sound. What the heck is that weird honk-whistle thing the males do. I thought our ducks were imitating the neighbor's mule! Have you found anything new? My guess is that it's a mating ritual.

My drakes make that noise every time they mate. Usually accompanied by strutting around, or swimming wildly in the pond, or flapping of the wings.....they seem quite proud of themselves.

Sometimes they do it when I approach with the food dish or treats. But mostly after mating. It does remind me of a donkey,

never made that association before. Just a bunch of showing off (and very proud of themselves) drakes!

We have a male drake that acts the same way!
