What breeds have black skin?

Hi,

I am asian

and every grandmother can not get enough dark skin chicken. Somehow they avoid silkies if possible. It must have something to do with the size and smell. That is what they tell me.

Thanks for the list earlier with the different dark skin breeds.

I called McMurray Hatchery about Black sumatras and dark skin. I got two different answer from two different people at different times. One was Yes they have black skin and one later was No they don't have black skin. I was a little peeved with them. Unless I can find someone in Fresno with black sumatras or one of these other dark skin breed I might just have to order chicks from a hatchery. I rather not do that and just buy juveniles or adults from locals. That way I know what I am getting.

By the way the local Hmongs in Fresno do have some dark skin chickens that they probably got from silkie mix. I got a few but want to improve on the skin, feather, variety of color and genetics.

Thanks falco, for your opinion on the subject. I thought it was funny how your family avoids the Silkies while other Asian families prefer just the silkies. I guess it just boils down to personal preference again.

I may just play around with them myself. I just want to make sure it's what the local Asian population are looking for. It won't do me much good to play around with a bigger bird with black skin, if nobody wants them. LOL

That was my addition to Wikipedia that was quoted about the breeds.

Those are all I could find about black skin at the feathersite. I'd like to know more about black skin in Sumatra and Rapanui, because I couldn't find specific info about their skin color. Ayam Cemani is bred for meat in SE Asia, and is highly prized.

My dream one day when I have the room is to breed a black-skinned, blue-egg chicken. I intend to start with a Silkie (preferably single-comb) / Ameraucana cross. Some Rapanui or Black Quechua lines may already have both characteristics, but it's hard to find info about them, since there are no clubs about them that I know of. An Ayam Cemani / Ameraucana mix would probably be great, but Ayam Cemanis are much more expensive.

I was wondering, which breeds of chicken have black skin? I know the Silkies do, are there other breeds?

There are several breeds. Silkies are the obvious and common ones. The most famous is Ayam Cemani from Java (they cost thousands) and there is a Swedish breed derived from the same stock a couple hundred years ago. There is also one that comes from north western china which is like Ayam Cemani but not so sharply defined in shape and plumage and it lays blue green eggs even though it has a full comb. It must therefore have some green jungle fowl in its ancestry. So it ticks all the boxes in terms of wow factors. Can't find its name though and obviously not well known yet. I've seen quite a few miniature hard feather game bantams with black skin too.

There are two Chinese fibro breeds of chicken with blue eggs the Dongxiang the Lushi. As far as I know no one in the US has them.

There is also the South American Black Quechua Olmec
