i'm looking for breeds that lay dark brown eggs and the only three i know of are marans and welsummers and barnvelders. are there any others? if not, what are the differences between the three? which one has the best temperament?? Thanks...

If you were plowing a field, which one would you use? Two strong oxen or 1,000 chickens??

I have BCMS. Silver Cukoo Marans and Wellsumers. My BCMS lay the darkest eggs, but the SCMS are not far behind. My Wells are not laying yet. The BCMS Rooster was very nice and gentle. Beautiful. I had to re-home him because of crowing issues. At least I got some chicks before he had to go. I do miss him.

I think BCM is Black Copper Maran, but I have never seen it with an "s" at the end, maybe the above person was meaning it in a plural way???  IDK hu

Got it Penedesenca. I don't have any or know anything about them though. I want some brown egg layers and I came across these in my search. Hopefully, someone else can tell you something about them. Here is a link that can tell you some about it.

The Crele roos are really pretty.

Good luck

Marans is spelled with an "S" even when it's singular.
