Hmmmmm, my Silkie rooster DID roost and he also climbed a tall and somewhat steep ladder to get into the coop.  Just FYI.

My silkies must not realize they're silkies...they go up and down the coop ramp, jump up to the second roost 24 inches off the floor. and jump up to the seat of the wooden chair and into the small tree used as a natural roost. I leave the chair in the yard for me to sit on when it's "chook time". They are in a same age group of EEs and Welsummers. It was keep up or loose out!

This is the pen my silkies are now in:

They seem to love it. Only other thing I may do is cover more of the run with something semi-transparent (for light). I don't like to cover it all though, as the rain and sun is fun for them.

FYI - one of my roosters gets up on the big roost constantly. As far as I know, that's the only place he sleeps.

I don't have a good pic of my current silkie coop but it is all on the same walk in level...most sleep on the floor but I made a small roost about 3-6 inches tall and they take turns using that...

Here is my next silkie coop for my new babies...I just have to figure out how to get it through the gate first...lol! It is an old dog house but is weather proof, insulated walls and roof ventilated...I will build a little deck off it and build my run around it...

How cute!!  I built my silkies a nice little coop (not that cute), it was only like 18" off the ground, and they refused to climb the ramp.  So I had to move them to a coop with the door at ground level.

I know this thread is forever old but where did you get your coop and do you happen to remember the price range? I've been living online for the past three days straight trying to find an affordable (less than $800) 4 x 4 on posts as I just got my very first chicks and am attempting to hatch out a splash from 7 blue/black/splash eggs in the incubator right now. I only want a few as pet/ show birds for my son and I to enjoy. :)

Mommy to a bright eyed 2 year old- 2 persian cats- 2 horses- 3 silkie chicks- 1 cochin chick- and secretly hatching 7 silkies in my son's closet (what men don't know they can't say "NO" to  )

I bought a large doghouse.  It cost around $200 and is a bit bigger then a 4x4 coop.  We modified it some and now it is our silkie coop.

our silkies go up and down the ramp easily but they just all pile in the corner of the coop when they sleep.....Don't really like to get up on anything...The ramp isn't on yet  in this pic....but it runs from left side of coop to corn crib turned run
