Could it be bedbugs? & they're coming to Christmas - UH OH

Actually, I'm not sure. But they've had flea infestations before, off and on for years really. And this seems to be new *to them* or different to them, so they are saying bedbugs, and that's why we think that.

No way to know for sure

I've read that bedbugs have even been found in hospital furniture, cloth lounge chairs, etc. I would then think that they can get into cloth chairs in doctors' offices, clinics, or any public furniture. Even expensive hotels have had the problem with so many foreign travelers these days.

What will you do if grandma does get bedbugs? I assume you would want to visit her. It's a tricky situation, for sure.

Public libraries across the U.S. have been dealing with them. Library books have been a big issue since bugs love to hide in books and papers. One of the libraries in a nearby town here found the bugs infested in the computer chairs and reading areas. They can be anywhere. Airline seats, waiting rooms...anywhere. They even advise not to set briefcases, bags or purses on floors or on any upholstered public furniture. If a purse shouldn't sit there I'm not so sure a human should either.

OP, glad things went ok.

I dont sit anywhere in less they have the hard plastic chairs because BB will even hide in the joins of the wood..

my dr. office has ones like this because there are 5 different docs in the same office and the amount of people that come through there in a day... they were having problems with keeping them germ free during the N1H1 out break.. and it just so happens they are great for preventing the spread of BB's too!

So, let's all fast forward a few years . . . . go ahead and put your hand up on your head and start scratching again ;)

I know all of us on this thread were slackjawed at the thought of LIVING with these bugs and not really doing enough to get rid of them. None of you could believe that someone out there could be so unconcerned about a bedbug problem. But, just as I suspected . . . . that's exactly how they rolled with this.

At the end of this summer, Gr'ma's old dog died, and we began having a huge problem with fleas in her house. In treating those and inspecting, we discovered that she had other "friends" living with her as well *sigh* Bedbugs. They were in the bedroom & the living room for sure, not sure about the 2 spare rooms.

We pulled her out of there and brought her to our house, which was also good because her health is declining and she wasn't open to having the help she needed in her house - so this kills two birds with one stone (after a nice decontamination in our laundry room shower while the clothes she was in were burned :) ) And when we talked about it to the SIL's family, nephew reported that they "Got rid of theirs at the end of winter, like January or so this year. So she didn't get 'em from us."

Dude, they were crawling on her in her living room recliner - these didn't just hatch lately, this has been a problem that no one realized for months at least.

Yeah, do those of you reading this even HAVE any head left to shake at this point? Or has it exploded off your neck like mine did???

We were pretty certain that they never really got them eradicated back in 2011 and as it turns out, we were right. So now my MIL is at my house (that's a whole OTHER post

.) DH laid down the law and said that his mom is not to enter her home at all for any reason until the bedbugs and fleas are gone for sure. We are not willing to risk bringing even one of either home to our house. Everyone agreed and she hasn't been back to her house since (though she fussed with me about it again just this AM *sigh*)

We've tried tackling it on our own to no avail, and DH is meeting with exterminators at her house today and tomorrow.

The kicker is, the SIL & BIL took her over to their house the first weekend after we brought her to our house. The plan was to just take her to a festival for the day & visit, but they went back to their house for awhile and then gr'ma was tired . . . . . gr'ma ended up spending the night at their house. When SIL brought gr'ma back the next day both of them sat on the bed in the living room (we put a bed in there for gr'ma so it can be like an nice large sitting/bedroom for her and she can have her own space). . .wait for it. . . wait for it. . . . .4 days later gr'ma needs help to the potty in the middle of the night, I'm down there and what do I see walking across the pretty pink flannel sheet but a BEDBUG!!!

So DH informed the SIL and her family what we found, and told them that they are not under any circumstances to take gr'ma into their home for any reason. If they DO take her inside their house, they will be moving her in there to stay because she will not be coming back to live with us. (They don't have space and SIL & her mom don't get along very well for very long - their strong personalities clash and a fight erupts after a few days of living together! -- so this is a pretty big threat that they will take seriously.)

And, their feelings are hurt because "How dare we accuse them of having bedbugs and being the source of where gr'ma got hers." Um, because that's the TRUTH, that's how we dare!

I came on here to look up this thread because DH and I were trying to figure out the timeline, and figured while I was here I'd give you an update. Turns out some people really are unbelievable, and I'm related to a few of them, LOL
