I noticed a small lump above her eye about a week ago, but it wasn't this bad!

What is wrong? What can I do to help Betty?
She doesn't seem to be in any pain and is laying, eating and drinking and acting normal.
She doesn't even seem to know it is there.

Please help if you can!

Oh wow.... That looks terrible....

I don't know if chickens get abcesses, but that was my first thought. It would be rather difficult to lance an abcess on a chicken's face though...

Looks like an abscess. I would clean it and lance it to remove as much infection as possible. Then keep it moist with antibiotic ointment so it can continue to drain. If you can prevent it from sealing back up, you may not have to lance again. I would avoid oral antibiotic at this time as it can be very hard on a chicken.

Does lancing an abscess just involve poking a hole in it with a needle and letting the liquid flow out?
 
I had a hen with a large lump that looked very similar to your hens. I tried to lance it with a needle and treat with antibiotics but had no success because very little drained, I ended-up culling her because it was clearly bothering her. I was later told that lacing a chickens abscess requires cutting and removing the infection more than just draining with a needle hole.

My hen had a small lump for 4-6 months before it got so big that I tried to intervene.

if the abscess is filled with fluid, a needle will work. the problem is that often it's filled with puss that has clotted or has lumps and won't pass through a needle. opening the abcess will allow all that to be cleared out.
haven't done this on chickens, but on sheep and goats, you have to open the abcess at least 1/2", press out the puss as much as possible, and flush the interior to get the rest out. betadine solution is what we use. then we give antibiotics, however there are some you can use in sheep that you just flush into the abcess and leave in there... vet prescription is required for the antibiotics and off the top of my head I don't know what type.
 
i have a bantam cochin hen that has a lump just like that, i have to drain it every few months. i just poke through the skin with a needle, then gently squeeze all the fluid out. idk what it is, but she is other wise healthy

You lance with a scalpel, you aspirate with a needle. The needle should have a syringe attached to it so you can suck out the pus. If you use a scalpel (or a CLEAN razor), you make a cut and let it drain, then you flush with sterile saline using a syringe (minus the needle) If you don't have clean syringes, you can buy U-100's from your pharmacist. You don't need a prescription, you just have to ask because they don't stock them where everyone can grab them from the shelf. Get sterile saline from any store, the kind for contacts is fine and its safe around the eye. If you want a clean scalpel, you can ask to purchase one from your vet or you can purchase an exacta knife from Michaels and then sterilize it by rubbing it with some isopropyl alcohol.

I strongly suggest you bring her to a vet.
