Mille Fleur Leghorn Thread PIC HEAVY

Hello! I know this is an old thread but I cannot seem to find Mille Fluer Leghorns anywhere but Sandhill. Is anyone still breeding these lovelies?

I bought a trio from that ad two weeks ago! I have no way to judge what's good or bad in a MFL, but they seem fine to me. He said he got his original stock from Omelet Ranch and another place that I have seen on line when I searched. He's been breeding from those for a couple of years now.

I'll add pics of the ones I bought, but they are backlit, so not the best. The seller was sure to warn me that he has found them to be not that great of layers, and personalities are flighty. But I wanted them for their looks more than those other qualities. They were hatched April and May of last year, and still not laying yet. (I can't remember if he said they were already laying before fall, but he said this breed will be the first to quit when the days get short, and the last to start back up. And quit if it gets too hot out, too.

(I did notice when I did a google image search to learn about MFL before I bought them, that the Craigslist ad photo is from an album here on BYC, in fact, from someone who posted in this thread early on. Not the seller's own photo.)

I never updated about the trio I bought that year. They were duds. One pullet died after two weeks. And I could never get any eggs to hatch from the male and female I had left. As for the breeder I got them from, he had cancer and told me his doctor told him to sell out of all his animals. I saw his ads around for a couple of years after that, and then no more.

I don’t recommend getting stock from Sandhill, based on the ones I bought in 2018. (Or was that ‘17? 🤔) None of mine came out Mille Fleur. Looked more like crele, but not even correct for Crele, either. However, Sandhill had gone through some losses to predators just prior to that, so IF he was trying to “rebuild” his MFL, then maybe by now he has improved on what I got.

I do believe @The Moonshiner is working with Mille Fleur. You could go ask over on his leghorn journal. I’ll get you a link to it.

My flock currently ranges in age from 6 1/2 to 9 months. Out of about 60 chicks I have 6 hens and 4 roosters to work with that have yellow legs. My goal is to bring these as close to the SOP of a white or brown leghorn. There is much work to be done on this project, it's so much fun! I've just started hatching from this flock. Can't wait to see how they grow out!

This variety is really curious. They come up to me for treats and generally follow me around. Very different than other leghorn varieties I've seen.

I don't plan to sell eggs or chicks until maybe the late spring/summer as I need to hatch out a lot so I can work with them.

Thanks so much for your interest!
