When they arrived back at the canyon the smokewolf took them from Garron and threw all but Mitar and Ranu into a cell. The smokewolf took them (Mitar and Ranu) up to the tower, where Leafe, the Devourer, and Sandra where waiting.

Meanwhile, black smoke filled the cell where Kovi and Daru and their pups were, the smoke would turn them dark if they inhaled it.

Kovi and Daru tried to keep their children from inhaling the gas, but started choking. The younger wolves stepped back as black stained the white fur of Kovi and Daru.

The scar over Kovi's eye became as blood red as his eyes.

The faint grey markings on Daru turned black as the rest of her body turned grey.

The blankness slowly crept into the others, turning their fur dark.
