Female asparagus sets seed and these are what you are seeing. For most gardens, you want the male crowns...produce more spears than the female.
A well tended bed of asparagus will continue to produce for 30 - 40 years.
From my two beds, 5 x 16 total, I harvest a 3 - 4 inch bundle of spears every day for about 6 weeks.
