Green thumb is itching, anyone else? - Page 42

Female asparagus sets seed and these are what you are seeing.  For most gardens, you want the male crowns...produce more spears  than the female.

 A well tended bed of asparagus will continue to produce for 30 - 40 years.

From my two beds, 5 x 16 total, I harvest a 3 - 4 inch bundle of spears every day for about 6 weeks. 

It's supposed to be nice today but then next week get cold again.  I wish it would get warm for more than a day at a time. 

Amen Rancher Hicks!  All of our spring projects would be so much more pleasant if we could enjoy at least 2-3 days at a time of warmth.  And with NO wind!

Seems as tho Mother Nature has been blowing relentlessly for way too long where I live.   What's up with that?

I suppose I can be grateful I'm not in TX, but then it might just blow all the loose branches into the next county. 

I really need to get a camera so I can show you pics of the mess in the woods.  I could just leave all the tires but I really want them out.  My back is bad and it's hard for me to drag them up to the road.  It will cost me $4 each to take them to the dump and there is at least $30-40 worth.  

When the weeds grow I don't see it but if I get a heavy duty weed  whacker I can do in the weeds.

I'm waiting for my rhubarb roots to come.  I'd like to get them in the ground.  CM has asparagus roots too.  Which brings me to my next question of the evening. 

How many roots do I need to plant for a small family?  How many can I plant in a 2 ' X 4 ' raised bed?     I know two question but I'm old and used to chicken math. 

It's sad what and where people dump things. The people we bought our home from 25 years ago owned a corvet they also had a baby. One day I was digging in the dirt in the back yard and found 6 quarts of used motor oil buried from this guy..SAD....

I just planted a mix of different greens yesterday. I'll plant more in a couple weeks. I also planted green beans.

It's a little early for beans.Plan on putting oriental greens, radishes and arugula tomorrow.thought I'd get to it today but spent most of the day cleaning out my woodland garden. IT was funny; if I left the piles of debris and moved to another area before I picked them up My little helpers (my chickens) would be in the pile spreading it all over the place maybe that's way I didn't get stuff planted

Not for where I'm at. <--- Southern California. ;) You have to get started early here because the sun burns everything by end of July beginning of August. I'm going to try some thin burlap canopies over my veggies this year to see if it helps and wet them down a couple times a day. Once 1pm hits, that sun is brutal!

Blue Scotch kale, snowpeas, brussel sprouts, purple kohlrabi, radishes, cauliflower, and bok choy have sprouted in my garden.  They were planted from seed tapes about 6 weeks ago.  Seed tapes take an extra 1-2 weeks to germinate, but they are already spaced appropriately (if you make them yourself) & you don't have to thin your seedlings out later down the line. 

Today, I am planting red Russian kale, spinach, and arugula.

Both of my seedless grapes rootstocks have sprouted new leaves and are getting new little branches! 

I had to restart all my seedlings indoors.  Cat knocked them all over & mixed everything up.  Lovely.  The only surviving 6-pack was my varied hot pepper mix, and they're doing very well.  Started hardening those off this week.
