could this be mites. i have checked, but not throughly

It could be mites, but I'll bet it's feather picking by other birds.  I had several bright, flaming, red butts in my birds due to that particular problem.  Whenever chicken skin is exposed to the elements it turns bright red whether it is on their butts or elsewhere.  The location is indicative of feather picking, though.  Butts and lower backs are target areas.  You should take some time to watch your flock.  I did that, and within an hour I had pinpointed a culprit who was walking up behind birds and just yanking out butt feathers by the mouthful.  I'm guessing you have the same thing going on.

Good luck.

Now this is post #3 tonight of this same problem.  Wonder what the deal with that is?   I think I will try changing feed.  I use Purina Layena which is vegetable based rather than meat based and I think I read somewhere that could cause pecking among the birds.  I used to feed Dumor laying and did not have that problem but I got tired of the stinky poop so thought that vegetable based would smell better and it does.  Oh well, I guess I can use a clothespin on my nose when I go in to feed and clean, better than raw butts and cannibals.

I am having the same problem with my chickens as you stated here.  Wondering what you found as the problem and how you fixed it.

I hope you take the time to send me a msg. I was first told that they were molting.....  several months later and red bottoms, my chickens look like crap.  They are all still eating and drinking and laying eggs.  Please let me know what you did to fix this problem.  Thanks.
