Here's ours in progress - we used to have a 'green roof' but the chickens tore it up so my husband was in progress with putting on cedar shake. The run underneath doesn't get used much - they free range in the back yard all day then hop up in the coop at night.

Inside we keep pine shavings, the food & water and the nest boxes.

It started life as an 8' x 20' dog run, concrete floor and six foot chain link fence. I built a 4' x 6' coop inside from left over construction materials, mainly SIPS panels. Those are 8" thick sandwiches of OSB (particle board) with foam inside, so they have high insulation value. I put in windows, hardware cloth screens, and a 4 foot high door.
The roof has clear corrugated fiberglass panels with fencing over them for security. We wrapped 2' x 8' corrugated galvanized sheet around the base to keep the bad guys out. I think I've spent about $250 on materials.
