I am a reasonably seasoned poultry keeper, including some easier game, and I just got some nice Malay eggs. I am set up to keep them in pairs or trios. I hear they are hard to raise but can't find specifically WHY. What are the issues? Any advice me for me? Much appreciated!

Actually in trolling through some of these posts, I've not seen a bird pictured up against a yardstick once. Anyone got a monster to show off?

My Ga noi is still young so I am really looking forward to when he matures. I was told he came from a 10 pounder stock and while still young he does have some size, I doubt he'll stand much taller than 24-28 inches tho.

Would love to see what a 3ft tall bird actually looks like.

Malays is not hard to raise as you guys think, it just not the same as other birds obviously, first, they need more time to mature, in my case over 6 months to get full color depends on your environment. next, feed is the most what the keeper always complained, if you feed with commercial feed, thats not going to help them grow faster, I do feed with commercial feed only to the chicks in the first 0 to 15 weeks, after that i will feed them with waste that we collect from nearest restaurant. we manage to get full 5 gallon bucket everyday, sometimes 2 bucket. waste from restaurant is not totally waste, sometimes i wonder why the customer not eat till clean, egg scramble, shrimp, lots of fish, rice and so on. I can say that we totally have zero expenses on grower.

For the roo and laying hens, they always keep free ranging, but now we only have 1 roo and 20 hens, so i need to keep them in the coop, so i can get higher % fertile eggs. they are not very friendly if they are alone, but if you keep 20 or more, they can be catch easily when they together. I cant say they are not aggressive cuz I dont have any breed to compare with, but they also not a friendly breed. you need to work hard to catch them if they are alone. for me we catch them at the late evening and after they start calm and no noises in the chicken coop. Here in Malaysia getting dark at around 7.30pm.

I raise about 120 of pure malays right now and counting, we are hatch eggs every week.
