Anyone with Rabbits??? - Page 2

I have a Holland Lop rescue bunny.  The information we got from the SPCA was that he was 5 years old but we think he may be older.  An in house bunny and purely pet.

Prior to George Harrison we had another bunny from our local university dumping grounds recused during a cull.  She is the brown one with her buddy Oreo (also rescued during the cull).  Sadly Jenna lived just a few months.  She had wry neck and did not respond to various treatments.

We also have a cat who apparently thinks she is a rabbit!  Does that count?  Her stinkeye puts my chickens to shame!

I think bunnies are wonderful pets.  They have personality, are playful and when litter trained they are very clean...ours is pretty good about chewing only his own toys but we do need to keep cords and apparently Croc shoes out of his reach.  He loves apple branches and will be happy that pruning time is approaching.  DH has talked about trying some meat bunnies but I have just become comfortable with the processing of chickens so the likelyhood of meat bunnies in the near future is pretty slim roll

We do! We do!  We started out with a few mutts with the plan of butchering them for meat for us and the dogs, however my husband (who is in charge of the killing part of butchering anything) decided he just couldn't kill the cute little things. Now we raise show rabbits, we do sometimes sell extra satins and mini lops for meat, but mainly they are pets, and go to pet and show homes.

Here are just a few pictures of our bunnies
Satins (siamese is the only color we have right now) These where are first bunnies, they are big, but calm, and quiet, they do not get as big or grow as quick as New Zealands or other Commercial breeds, but they grow quick enough to provide a nice amount of meat.

Mini-rex - our second breed, I love Mini rex, they are so active and have so much personality.

Mini-Lop - just added these last spring, and boy are they work! They are a lot of fun, and the range of colors is awesome, but we are having a heck of a time with the crowns. The addition of some great stock this February will help with that though.

Beauiful bunnies!  You confirmed for me that I will continue to discourage the meat bunny plan. My  DH self admits that the killing part of processing our chickens never gets easier for him, although he continues to do it.  I somehow can't see the bunny processing happening!  Would be a whole new project for us too I am sure.

We have three breeds, used to be four but "BOB" died recently. He was a Florida White (good, small meat breed). One Champagne D'Argent doe, one Black Otter Rex and one Black Otter Rex/x and one Black Otter Rex buck.

We only breed for meat, since it's not only tasty, but better for you than chicken and dresses out very well. I am also learning how to tan hides. Hubby wants a bedspread (good luck)

I'm really sorry we lost Bob, he really put some meat on his babies; luckily we have a little on the way with our Champagne from him fl.gif

I raise flemish giants, 4 adults and usually a bunch of babies and a little rescue mini rex named Sharpie(she looks like someone marked all over her with a black marker). Poor thing had very badly bloody and infected feet, the guy told me she was free if I wanted to try to treat it. Well after clipping nails, putting her on solid floors and getting her a fuzzy bad she is like new, even has furr on her feet again. The rabbits actually visit the chickens all the time to get a bit of exercise and the chickens have a big fenced in area and Rupert treats them like his flock, he calls them when he finds food and he gets between them and whatever danger may be lurking(the dogs, lawnmower, people) it's too cute Rupert is such a sweet guy.
