Also, you could be using a really soft pencil. I, personally, prefer HB grade pencil over the darker, harder ones like 4H and 2H. The soft ones smear a lot.

My hand always ends up looking like a used tortillion after I draw. D:

 

 

I agree to this. Though, sometimes its necessary to use the darker (Softer) pencils when you want something to appear darker. But that doesn't really matter. Perhaps, to stop the smudging, place a small piece of paper underneath the side of your hand when you place it on your drawing paper. It will prevent lead getting onto your hand, and thus stop the smearing.

I'm careful about that. The thing is that the drawings are smudging to the next page in my birdie drawing book. Then, when it moves, it smudges back, making it smudgy.

If that's the case, you may need to get a harder pencil, IMHO.

I just finished a drawing of the Doctor from Star Trek Voyager. big_smile.png

I'm, sadly, proud of it because I stink so badly at people. 

I still have to scan the drawing, but this is the picture I used:
