My 9 month old Wyandotte went broody about 5 days ago. She chose the favorite nesting box of all my chickens and every day the other 3 would get up in there and lay their eggs and every day I would take the eggs out of the box. Yesterday, I found her in a different nesting box and actually acquired some fertile eggs and placed under her, thinking what the heck, might as well let her have a go at it. She worked those eggs under her and all seemed well until this morning. She is now back in the favorite nesting box--which is empty--and abandoned those eggs we gave to her yesterday. I'm perplexed as to why she would abandon the eggs when she seems so set on being broody. Any ideas??

Domestication has often made chickens lose reproductive intelligence. LOL

She'd sit on rocks if you put them in the right place. Just move the eggs back under her and keep note which ones they are so you can pull out any extra eggs that might be laid in the nest.

Either that, OR she was very well aware that those fertile eggs you snuck under her were not HERS! Who's the intelligent one now! Anyway, I hope you are able to pull the wool over her eyes (or under them, I guess) and pull off a successful hatch.
