I grow lavender (zone 6a). I harvest it, and hang it in the coop. The scraps of lavender get mixed around in the hemp bedding. This pactice has worked really well for 5 hens for one year so far. The hemp is one year old and i have no intention of getting rid of it. The added dried lavender really does help. I can smell it while turning their bedding. I also hang fresh mint that i grow as well. I scoop the poop with a cat litter scooper in the morning (takes 2 minutes). Lavender is a wonderful herb to grow while having chickens. 2 weeks ago i had a crated chicken with a limp and I added lavender scraps to her crate hoping it would do what it does for humans, help calm? Dunno, but chicken didnt seem to mind. So far the coop doesnt seem to have any bug issue. If it does, I'll be back on here searchin' away for a solution! Have fun and Happy 4th of July!!YES! I made the shelf at waist height so no bending to clean. I simply scoop, shake and throw it away. The PDZ absorbs the odor so it does not smell, even after several days! I try to do it every 2-3 days max so I keep the moisture down in the coop since I have alot of chickens
