Neighbors are Abusing their chickens

My neighbors have a 10x10 fenced area where they placed a borrowed Rooster and 3 Hens for the purposes of Mating them.


The Rooster crows all day so each crow (which normally would not bother us at all) reminds me of the abuse going on in our back yard. There is a fence but the location is about right there.

They upped the antics after we took their chickens and put them in our coop a few nights ago. They were sitting on our shared fence, rooster also so put them to bed with our chickens. Tried to nicely explain Roosters kill chickens and the area is not wide enough but got comments as if it is "Gigantic". Finally I said, What you are doing is abuse, the Rooster can kill the chickens, they have no where to go. They are constantly being jumped on for sex, they look scared to death. The rooster runs in circles trying to get out.

Now they've covered their fenced area on the top so the CHickens have no chance to get away. Does anyone have any ideas? I would like to go over and just take them for good one night, not sure there is any other alternative?


Thanks for any advice. This is very upsetting. They call themselves Christians and attend our church, but are not members if that makes any difference.

Oh and they called my Pastor worried they'd feel uncomfortable due to the other night, they left mad at what I told them, my feelings it is abuse and refused to talk. Pastor called and pretty much seemed to be more on their side, he is far from an animal lover.

What is very upsetting is well meaning neighbors butting in when they really don't know what they are doing. If you were my neighbor and my chickens went missing from my covered run one night you better bet the police would be knocking on your door before sun up and I would see you in court on charges of trespassing and theft. You will find that many others on this site are of the same mind. Please, please, please, PLEASE visit the learning center section of this website and educate yourself on normal chicken behaviors and standard husbandry practices! What your neighbors are doing is not abuse. A 10x10 run is adequate for 4 chickens. It is larger than the run that I have for 6 hens and 1 rooster (although my birds do get out to free range most days and on days when the weather or time will not permit that I offer enrichments to keep them busy throughout the day).

I've seen many a people keep chickens in much smaller areas. We free range and our chickens have a huge yard so I totally understand where you are coming from, but right now I have roosters in a 4 x 4 pen because they almost killed one of my little silkie hens and de-feathered and bloodied the back of some of my other hens. The roosters in the pen are going to be dinner but still I feel really bad about keeping them in such a small pen. The alternative is not an option though.

Personally, beings that you live next door to these people and I assume that is not likely to change soon, I don't think there is really much you can do. If they have food and water and are not in deplorable conditions, such as trash and filth, I think you just need to let it go and hope for the best. Sometimes that is all we can do. We can't save everyone and by trying to save those chickens, you could put your own livestock in danger. By putting them in with your chickens, you have exposed your chickens to who knows what. It is very dangerous to mix older chickens. That is how I ended up with sick and dead chickens from a contagious disease.

So if roosters should not be in with hens, how did chickens manage to procreate all these thousands of years?! Do yourself and YOUR chickens a favor and educate yourself before you pass judgment on others. And a 10X10 pen is plenty for 4 chickens. If you had grabbed up my chickens and put them in your chicken house without saying anything to me, there would NOT be "peace in the valley" after that!!

I don't understand what your neighbor did wrong? You do understand how chicks are created don't you? There is a reason your preacher took their side! Think about it.
 
To be fair 3 hens to a rooster is not a good deal, especially where they cannot get away from him. My friend an avian vet will not even own a rooster on his big farm because yes they will TERRORIZE the hens. there should be about 5 hens in there and he will still probably choose to bother one or two more than the others. I do not know how people can be so inconsiderate, they only care about making a buck. I would not do that to any of my hens, even the ones I have spent $100. a piece for, they do not deserve it, and deserve my respect. They will have a way to get away from the roosters and take turns free ranging. Roosters out one day hens the next so no mix breeds. I can't believe the little pens people use to breed. So don't feel bad you are not the only one that thinks its a pretty sick practice.
 
I can not believe the nature of this thread! Chickens AND roosters are God''s creatures. If they were not meant to be together, he would not have created both sexes! This goes for all creatures. Do not covet thy neighbor's goods... his chickens are his goods.
