Saw my first rat, a big boy. I'm going to set up a snap trap the the bucket with water. I'm looking for ideas for bait. Poison is not an option because of other pets and wildlife (the good kind). Thanks!!

Peanut butter or bacon are always good choices.
they make confined rat traps that the bait cant come out of and nothing else can get into it. we have the mouse station kind in our house and our dogs have never given it a 2nd thought.
put corn meal or dog food in the bucket it works like a charm

I bought 2 traps from walmart - one had mozza cheese, the other a bit of canned dog food - found that big boy quite dead this morning

You want something with an odor so that it draws them in from a distance. Cheese, peanut butter, canned dog food, ect. Glad he liked the cheese! My favorite is peanut butter on a snap trap, you can shove it up under the little bait grip just in case you have a sticky trap that isn't too sensitive. The work it takes to get the bait will trigger it no matter what. I've had mice that steal bait, all the way up until I really worked it in under the grip.
I have best luck with bait under the pad, not on top.
