setting eggs tonight!! anyone else? - Page 5

Got three more eggs today to pop in for the last 24 hour set up.  One  more green and two from the Orpingtons for 22 total.  MUST STOP ADDING EGGS NOW!!!  duc.gif  I set my first goal and now I have to stick with it!!!  Yes, you bad influences I will have to wait until day 6-7 because I will be away at work, probably a good thing.  thumbsup.gif  Do you all post pics of the eggs in the bator?  Other than the turner they just are kind of there.

Unathorized chick story: July and August are super busy with the garden, canning, haying, fairs/shows for cows and chickens oh yeah and work!  wee.gif  At the end of July I thought we had 3 Speckled Sussex hens in with the feed store egg flock.  Then in August I only saw two but thought nothing of it.  I came home from my two weeks of work and fair and my brother is outside BBQing.  He was visiting because he can't BBQ at his apartment.  bun.gif He says, I've been hearing this strange noise the whole time I've been here.  It sounds like something needs oiled or like a piece of metal that is about to break off.  I looked at the barn, all over, checked the TV antenna, the tractor, and the chicken coop.  I even checked to make sure the dog didn't have extra tags.  I said, lets check the gates to make sure the cows haven't itched another one off its hinges!  We are out by the corral and we start hearing "the noise".  Out from under our coop come the missing Speckled Sussex with 14 chicks!  jumpy.gif  We have a real mix in there between roosters and hens so what they all are is anyone's guess.  We only found one unhatched egg under there so she really did do a good job, that's 93%!  And the 14 ended up being 7 pullets and 7 roos.  We are waiting for the little pullets to lay to see what color eggs they lay as the dominate rooster is Ameracuana.  yippiechickie.gif  So, now the hole is plugged and that Speckled Sussex hen is banded for possible future use as a broody!  The End old.gif

40 feedstore mixed flock layers, including 7 of last fall's unauthorized chicks, 11 SQ LF Black Orps, herd of 11 Maine-Anjou, Shorthorn, and Saler cattle, four cats, and one lazy, loud red healer!

Hatching/adding to my LF Black Orps, and some blues/splashes too. Working on self-blue project Orps & Speckled Sussex. Thinking about trying Diamond Jubilee Orps. Show season complete, points earned!!!

Hi my name is Heather and I candle eggs when I probably shouldn't!

I checked out 4 of the lightest shelled eggs this morning & I'm pretty sure I see dots in all!   In 2 for sure there was more than yolk and the others were kinda spot-y shelled so not to clear but I'd guess go for eggbryo!DSCN3999.JPG

Milakegrl,

I see in your picture you have a incubator thermometer on a sheet of plastic lying on top of your eggs. It looks exactly like the one in our borrowed incubator.

Do you find it's temperature is reliable, and comparable in readings to your other thermometers?

I put them all in the hot tub at the hotel where I work which has a thermostat on the heater. If you don't have a hot tub (haha) put them in a cup of hot water with a thermo you use on yourself- if they all read the same they are correlated with each other and you can trust the temp in the bator.

I have that one set to about 104....the bulb is not directly on an egg, and since it's on top of the eggs and they are in a turner I'm comfortable with that temp.  Since the turner keeps moving (which is it's job, right?!) the aquarium thermos keep sliding off so I just took them out, I don't want them to catch in the rails of the turner.  Now, you are hand turning right?  So your eggs are sitting horizontally while mine are vertical- so my temp should be higher taking into account for the air cell at the top of the egg.  I think I sent you a link on another thread about temp layering - ignore the title...

http://cmfarm.us/stillair.html

I took the readings from the other thermos and took into account WHERE the bulbs were in relation to verticle position of the egg.  The yolk should be 99.5-100.5.  So if a thermo bulb was lower than another I expect it to read lower.

OK, so horizontal eggs, if you set the thermo with the plastic to rest on top of the eggs, you should have a reading of about 102 -assuming you know your thermo is on target.

Sorry, I can be somewhat long winded in answering a simple question, which I hope I did answer.  roll.png

Ok, so not the best representation of my eggs. I had just been turning my eggs so the temp was down and I forgot to turn one before I took the pic!! lol I really don't let my eggs "live" in those conditions. But these are all my eggs. :) Take a moment and admire them with me. ;)
