Thank you, guys. I hate this part of chicken husbandry. It just sucks and it's sad.

The sweet thing is my dog keeps following me around and laying at my feet and pushing her nose into my cheek when she sees me cry. I love her. :)

1 RIR rooster, 1 RIR hen, 1 White Leghorn hen, 1 Gold Barnevelder hen, 1 bantam rooster, 1 bantam hen,  lots of chicks with more on the way, one black lab mix puppy, Maggie (or Maggot, if she's bad), 1 happily un-pregnant tortoise shell cat, Jack, 6 kittens, and 1 rabbit (That until 2-28-12 we thought was a boy...).

Great news!  I decided to put the duck eggs into lockdown a day early because another BYCer recommended it.  I candled before closing up and found 3 internal pips!  I could also see 2 others pushing against the membrane to get into the air cell!  Unfortunately, the last one looks like it died several days ago, but 5 out of 6 is awesome, especially after my bad chick hatch!  I've been told they can take up to 48 hours to hatch out.  It's going to be hard not to sit next to the incubator and watch!

Current standings: 12 guinea pigs, 26 rabbits, 37 chickens, 3 geese, 1 duck, and 2 teenagers....numbers are subject to change on a daily basis.

Last edit 4/12 - hatched 1 runner duck

4/15 - hatched 2 chicks, traded 10 rabbits for 3 goslings

Yay!! :D I'm so happy for you!

Question: With a rounded bill, how on earth to ducklings hatch? Do they have some sort of egg tooth like chicks?

I have potential good news. I don't think the one I thought had a blind eye, does. I went to pick him up with inspect his eye, from his "blind" side to make it easier and he ran away from my hand, which he shouldn't have been able to see if he's blind in that eye. His eye is still watery, but not nearly as bad, and the bubbled have subsided. I'm still rinsing his eye with saline water. Hopefully he gets better. If not, it doesn't seem to be impairing him at all.

46 eggs in the incubator. I pulled out five clears today. Still have four that look like they have blood rings. I'm waiting to see if they do or not. They are all to dark to see clearly into.

How are everyone's chickies doing today? Mine just enjoyed some yogurt. :) Now I have to clean the brooder... and them... =P

As you know I have chicks due to hatch on March 8th. There will be NO room in the brooder for them unless I move the others out. By the time they get here 12 of the chicks will be a month old and the other 6 will be 2ish weeks old. Can I move then outside to a tractor at those ages, as long as they have a lamp, still? I'm pretty sure I can and I don't see what option I have, but I want some reassurance. My grandmother has some heat lamps she offered to let me borrow when my first hatchlings were put into the incubator. If she still has them available I can get 1 or 2.

Yes, you can smile.png Last summer  It was very hot outside so we put some 2 week olds outside without a light and they did great! So as long as they have the light they should do fine  as long as it's not snowing or below freezing. smile.png

I dream of a day when chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.

I've got them temporarily fixed up in the tractor right now. It's really warm outside so I figured they could spend some extra time out there today. :) They are sooo cute. The oldest are trying out their wings. The younger ones, that are about 4 days old, are copying them, and they only have like two wing feathers a piece at the moment. It's so adorable. love.gif
