I had a chick hatch yesterday out of the side of the egg. It's head was bent back towards it's body and it was a struggle for it to get out. It took at least 18 hours from pip to freedom. It even broke the egg in half and was laying on it's back in the other half of the shell, having a hard time standing. Now about 12 hours after that it can stand and is almost fully fluffed out.

It has a bent neck and it hasn't been able to hold it's head up for long. The neck has improved since hatch but still has a little 'S' curve through it. I tried to massage it a little but I didn't want to force anything. I put it in the brooder box separate from the earlier chicks. Will it's situation improve with or without my help? What would you do?

Anyone know of a chicken chiropractor?
 
The only thing I can think of is to try some poly-vi-sol without iron. Or give it a little more time to see if its neck straightens out on its own. Good luck.
 
Look up wry neck on here and read about the treatment. I had a week old chick with wry neck but with baby vitamins (without iron), vitamin e and dropper administered liquid yolk, she came through just fine.
 
Well I have been treating the chick with the vitamins and hand feeding it and watering it to make sure it is getting nutrition. I haven't had enough observation time to see if it is feeding and drinking on its own. The neck is showing no signs of improving. It was hatched this way and didn't develop this after the fact.

It doesn't seem to be suffering in any other way. Do I give it more time and treatment? At what point do I need to make a decision on whether to cull or not?
 
I was just checking in to see what eventually happened with this chick. We have 2 of them in our batch of just-hatched chicks that have "bent necks". :(
 
I want to know how this chick turned out also. I had a chick with a bent neck that stayed just like it was when it hatched and I too gave the poly vit and vit E. It help her somewhat to have better range of motion, but the head still goes to that side and neck is curved. She is now 3 wks old and seems fine other than her handicapped.
 
I have just hatched a chick with this problem also (2 days old). She sleeps standing up, she is separated and is with 3 other chicks I have in my sick bay. They were the last 4 hatched and all have issues (crooked feet, and 2 that didn't absorb all there yolk sac, but have now). I'm not sure how much nutrition she's getting, which worries me. I'm worried if I give her water it will go into her lungs so I have just been dipping her beak in water a few times a day. How do you tell? I haven't seen her poo either, but she is really active and vocal, and seems totally fine....I've seen her peck at some food but I don't know how we'll she eats..this is my first lot of chicks, 22 hatched out of 26. I wish too there was a chicken chiro...I joked with my hubby, that I should take her on his next visit to his chiro....
