MAINE chicken stocks, swaps and shows 2012 - Page 28

What about birds being shipped in and out of the state?    Also the shippment of hatching eggs?     How does the state control that?    I think in order to control  Avain Flu, the states need to be doing more testing on wild birds, rather than rely on the flock owners for the testing.     There is NO WAY that any state can prevent these diseases from entering their state.

from what I heard, there was one case of AI in maine and it was traced back to the wild birds.

I'll have to ask Austin. it's a send out test and isn't done at the farm from what the state vet said.

Yes that is correct! Who ever is testing for your NPIP is surpose to test for AI too. The AI test goes out to the lab and when you get your card it will read NPIP and AI.  But I also think that the tester can let you know on the spot if the AI test is clear.

the state vet said it was pullorum was all that maine was required to test for. AI is not required or wasn't when he gave his talk on it a few months ago at the poultry meeting. since AI is sent out, the tester can't tell you it's clear, only the pullorum test.

(and this is all from what the state vet said- we asked)

Well that may be!  I ask to have mine AI tested, because I do show in other states!   So yes they do test for AI  in Maine!   When I recieved my card for NPIP, AI was on my card too.

sorry, i didn't say they don't test at all for AI in maine, just that it's not part of our regular npip testing.

Is there a date set for the Bangor swap? It is not yet on the master list. It is the only one not a really long drive for me (about 15 miles). Went to the swap in Augusta on the 21st, bought 1 cockeral and 7 pullets from 4 breeders and had a great time. (The little ones are doing great, seem happy and getting along very well, despite being from 4 sources).

It was such fun to see so many breeds that I had only seen in pictures and meet lots of other BYC fanatics.  Got to talk with some really nice folks who were most generous with sharing information. Still would like to find one or two cream legbar pullets but otherwise fairly close to full house for now (unless I really get tempted) lol.
