Humidity ????

My homemade incubator is doing the same thing but I can't get it up past 29%. I have 2 sponges in there, one in half, and the other one not. Any replies for Farmboydj and me??

hi there,new here and doing some research, surface area of water should control humidity not the amount of ,maybe try different size cups or lids filled with water, only new at incubating (first hatch) but this method worked for me to maintain steady humidity at 60-65% humid,but also i am not sure if this is the right  humidity  i should be aming for, some say higher some say lower than this, cheers

Try adding some more surface area like another sponge.  This time of year it took me 4 sponges and a n extra tin of water to hit the 40% mark. 

I am new to hatching and reading up as much as I can. I have a LG and have the same problem. I put the plug it has you take out back in and got it to 40-45% but need some thing to get it higher for the last three days and will try this. Thank you. :)

^as they said up there, it is all about surface area .. not depth. When I had my first hatch, I was using trays and lids and containers full of water. That didn't help at all. Then I pretty much lined the bator with soaking wet washcloths and that humidity shot up like you wouldn't believe! Good Luck!

Will do my best to answer your concerns.  I have an LG so what ever I suggest , see if you can adapt it to your incubator design.

2-4 small jars filled with warm water, and have a sponge, I cut them to fit, sticking into the water jar like a straw, with the top hanging out. THe more the sponge is exposed to the air , the more moisture is wicked from the jar into the air.

I also lay wet sponges in my homemade incubator to get the RH up quickly. Or use rolled paper towels that are high quality paper towels that hold their shape when wet.

Some incubator designs need the water replenished regularly. Either use a straw thru a hole to keep replenished or similar idea.

Other ideas that I have read: lay a wet paper towel on the floor and put eggs on top, dribble in water to keep paper towel wet.

Humidity problems in a Sportsman can often be caused by a leaking door gasket or seal.  If yours is an older model try going around the perimeter of the door with a lit candle. If the flame is blowing around your humidity is likely being blown out the door. New seals are available from GQF or self adhesive weatherstripping can be found at your local hardware store.
